What good is showing the number of players playing if it is understood that these aren't players that the op can play with. The majority of players are all playing the same popular games. For example there are more games played every 5 min of azul than there are of one of my fav games (caravan) in a week. On top of that several of these players are only playing within their small groups. If you aren't playing these select popular titles or you don't have friends to play with this site may seem inactive. I see a lot of these types of threads and I think bga attempted to get people to play outside of their groups more with the new changes like hiding elo for coops and the power leveling.

Bga could grow the user bases for more games but from post made on the summer games thread it sounds like they must promote certain games thus leaving all of the others on the back burner. I see some games that I had been playing for a long time get a slight push when they finally get their day of fame in the summer and winter challenges. But it isn't the same as getting a week in the spotlight. Also by the next day there is a new game being announced.
The OP complained about not having enough users, Meeple replied that there were plenty of users, countering the OP's statement. People are here, just not playing the specific game the OP wants them to be playing. It just so happens their main game (Chess) is probably more popular than something like Azul, just not on BGA of course. So it's not even a matter of a fringe game not getting the attention they want.

Though on the topic of fringe games, there's only so much for BGA to do there. They have too many games to effectively advertise them all. They announce some of their new stuff, etc. but they more or less leave it to the games/players themselves to attract attention.
You took it upon yourself to check the op game history. They had no mention of chess and simply made a statement that has been frequent on the message board. You are a frequent poster so I know you've seen them before and these type of threads will keep arising. Now let's look at why these people have these unrealistic expectations for bga. When you first come to the site what does it say? There are 9.8 million players to challenge and 780 games. It doesn't say there are more like 10,000 users at any given time. 85% of those players are only playing 7%-10% of the games we offer. Then of the 15% left x amount are only playing w/ friends and family and x amount are only playing arena. There are also other factors like playing only on your strength level etc. So this is why you have users puzzled as to why they are waiting in lobby for 30 mins for a game.

I am not arguing if bga is wrong for how they're conducting business. They must promote certain games. But like a song on the radio that gets played 1000x a day that song is more likely to become popular than one that no one has ever heard.

this is an odd take in this thread... but it has nothing do with OP and his problem that he cant find players for a game that hes better off playing on other sites dedicated to that.

OP is free to do whatever he wants, of course, but BGA will never be the #1 site where Chess players come to. I usually have zero problems finding games I want to play.

Real time sometimes is a struggle, but you can usually get a game via Turn Based.

I am sure you have seen this implemented in other areas as well or like with the apps on your phone. So let's not pretend there is not a business with people making profit on BGA
I'm not pretending BGA isn't a business - I'm just from a different era, and for most of my life if you wanted something you paid for it.

Now people seem to look at things that are free at the point of use (like news websites, social media websites, and yes BGA if you aren't Premium) and complain bitterly about them. As someone who lived through the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s etc I just find that very odd.

Equally the approach I took both back then and now is pretty much the same - if I like something, I use it, and if I don't like it I don't use it.

Rather than these people who say "BGA has dice that are fixed, and moderators that don't care, and a terrible UI.....oh but wait a minute it still allows me to play games for free so I am going to quietly play 5,000 games without having to pay whilst also spouting out about how bad it is".

The truth is, if you're getting BGA for free you're getting a very good deal. If you pay you also are - and at that point you are a customer, and may find BGA listen to you more as well...
They don't listen at all, doesn't matter if you pay... Unless you don't need to be moderated, in that case they do 😂
Yup.

Also Frogstar non premium players make this site a lot better simply by just being here. In addition to that there are non prems who frequently help in the forums (basically free customer service), help playtest games, report bugs and give good ideas to make the site better, etc etc.

Say I want to play game x but it takes forever to find a table is there somewhere users can browse that's actual people talking rather than a massive catalogue of games? Might be an idea for people to advertise the games they are interested in, try and sell why they thing they are worth learning and offer to teach even.
I'd guess you're supposed to use the game specific forums to look for tables of that particular game.
It is actually against rules to use the forums to find players for games. The reasoning I saw from the mod is that the forums would be to clogged if too many people did this. In the alpha stages you can use the chat to reach out to players and sometimes small groups are formed. But advertising for games isn't a bad idea. I've wanted to do that for a few games in the past.

The op could've been trying to play another game but couldn't due to long wait times. But lets just assume they were referring to chess and that they would be better off playing on another site. Ok. What about the appox. 600 other games here that it can be difficult to find a game? Does the op statement not stand with those? If the player base was larger wait times would be shorter.

It is great that you haven't had problems finding games. From the looks of things you have only played fairly popular games. People like me who have been here longer and have played a wider variety of games have found difficulties finding players for certain games.

Even switching to turn based can be a hassle at times. A lot of turn based players play at slow paces as well like one move a day which in a 4p game can take days to get back to you. So I wouldn't necessarily say resorting to tb because you cant get a real time and waiting hours/days in lobby just to get a game at 1 move a day should be classified as being easy to get a game.

Having 10,000 players on sounds like a lot. But looking at your screenshot on this page you can see that there was over 2,000 players participating in just 6 out of the 788 games here.

Why would this be relevant? You can play popular games and other games.

OP is right. They might have been talking about Chess, which by the way is one of the most popular board games in the world so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect low wait times for Chess games. But it applies to plenty of other games. I'd love to play Fluxx in real time but it's difficult to get games for it unless you're already in a group that likes playing Fluxx. And Star Fluxx is very annoying to play in turn based due to how Surprise cards work (think Catan trading and how Catan is better suited to real time because of it). It's not like Fluxx is a niche game that nobody's ever heard of, either.

As for why it's relevant that a majority of the players on this site are playing only the most popular games on BGA... I'd say that's entirely the point of this thread. After all, it's not called Board Game ArkNova! If you want to play any of the less popular games, you have to hope people will join your table in time before it expires or you have to network and generate enough interest for people to want to play the game with you. Not to mention BGA itself incentivizes playing lots of different games by giving you gift points which you can then use to redeem months of Premium membership.

So what's the expectation here, that you should be able to find opponents to play your game of choice live 24/7? Isn't that asking a bit much?

BGA cannot force people to want to play games they aren't interested in, and most BGA games are not popular among the broader public. How many people on the planet are interested in Fluxx? Few.

You're right. BGA is merely a platform on which to play games. BGA doesn't owe the OP or anyone else short wait times. But... none of that takes away from the issue the OP posted about. So in my post I agreed that yes this issue does exist (despite people in this thread pretending it doesn't) and the solution is to find friends to play specific games that don't have enough traction on BGA.

If you're arguing strictly based on popularity, once again, Chess is one of the most popular games in the world. "How many people on the planet are interested in Chess?" Millions.

And how many of those millions are interested in playing chess on BGA when other dedicated platforms exist? Probably 10.

The issue still exists, even if we say absurd lines like long wait times are to be expected, Fluxx isn't popular, or if you want to play Chess pick up your ball and go elsewhere. Is that the goal of the nay-sayers of this thread? To drive people to play somewhere else?

Yup. Also unless you sign up with friends and family you don’t have the luxury to just ask friends to play games with you when you can’t find strangers. It took me playing here years and thousands of games to find the friends that I have now.
