Anonymous thumbs down only furthers the bad trend of the internet supporting bad actors and trolls. It allows them to inflict punishment or abuse upon others without having to be responsible in any way for their actions. Thumbs down should be removed entirely, but if it is not going to be removed, it certainly shouldn't be kept anonymous. What purpose does keeping it anonymous serve?

It all seems a little bit like ebay, where the option to give a bad reputation marker is too one-sided. And that can make a thumbs down a little bit of a weapon. For example, recently I was in a game of hearts to 75 points, and two players were in the low 50s, a good position for them to be in, especially as I had 38 points and the 4th player had 22. I had been struggling with lag throughout the game, apologising and hitting f5 for nearly every move. (btw, this seems to be necessary a lot with a lot of players)

When someone else has a chance to win, I feel that it is not appropriate for me to abandon the game - it smacks of me only wanting to continue the games I think I can win. Anyway, one particular player in the 50s kept nagging for an abandon. And then the problems really started. I began what was obviously an attempt at shooting the moon... This must have infuriated him, as he virtually threatened me, by saying that if I didn't allow the game to abandon, I would probably get 3 red thumbs, because I was being rude. (This is a guy with nearly 7% red thumbs...) I wasnt the only one refusing the abandon, it was 2 vs 2. In the end, I won the game, which gave me a feeling of evil triumph, but I think using the red thumbs as a punishment for lag is inappropriate, as the little red clock symbol is sufficient.

In the end I think I got 1, maybe 2 red thumbs, but I think red thumbs should be tradable, 1 red thumb can be cleared by 20, 50, or even 100 green thumbs, whatever. Or trolls get the gratification they desire, with no comeback. (I didn't need to give that jackass a red thumb, he already had one from me, for being hypercritical of another player who played the wrong card when someone else was shooting the moon. So far I've been in 2 games with "rude guy"and both times he's been offensive.)

I think many players already do this mentally. While it would be nice to have a spotless record, knowing that the red thumb is highly subjective lessens a few stray one's impact. I don't have an exact cut-off, but if someone has less than 10 thumbs and over 200 green, (which could be as high as 5%, I realize), I don't worry about it. When it's over 10% and the site notifies me of this, I start to worry.
Well, at least for players with several thumbs. 1 red and 4 green I treat as 1 red, not 25%. For me, this player just ran into their red-thumb sprayer early.

I agree. I think there should be a way to get rid of red thumbs.

This thumb system is inherently flawed.

Nearly all systems are inherently flawed. What system would you suggest that is first, fair when it works (i.e. some people do deserve them), but is not unfair to folks who maybe don't deserve them, and at the same time does not require a billion volunteers having to take the time looking into each and every one of them to see if they are deserved or not?

If you buy from someone on Amazon do you expect them to have a clean 5.0 star record? Or is maybe 4.9 good enough?

I kind of just ran into this....
I am new to here and only played 2 games: one yesterday and one today, and just realized that I got one green and one red thumb. However, I don't know what I did wrong. In both games nobody talked or said anything. I did not saying anything either. I am not the winner of either games and did not spend overtime or leave the game in progress. And I don't know who gave the red thumb so I don't have anyone to ask what I did wrong, either. I gave all other three players green thumb for the game I played today. I did not give anything for the player I played with yesterday. The system asked me if I would like to recommend the player I played with yesterday (my first game) for other new players and I said no because s/he did not try to teach me. But I did not gave s/he a red thumb either.
I feel a little frustrated now...

I don't know if that person would know you answered that way. (I never even saw any such thing when I played my first game.)

As to the teaching thing... was there an expectation that the person was to teach you? Did they know you were a new player looking to be taught? You might want to keep in mind that even if you put the invite out and it said it was your first game, there's no way for anyone to know if you have played the game any place else.

I agreed with you that other players do not have any responsibility to teach a new user. However, what I was asked is if the player provides any help for new players and my answer is no (since I did not get any help). That's it. I don't really think that is the person who gave me the red thumb but just I have only played with 4 players (1 from the first game and 3 from the second) so it should be from the four of them.
