"time out" system utterly broken

Post by OzLefty76 »

BGA desperately requires some amendment to its ludicrously harsh and unreasonable system of letting people be kicked for being "out of time" and then, to make it worse, penalising with heavy "karma" hits that are painful to recover from.

1. I'm in Australia. I set Arena to "slow", so I should have 24 hours for each turn. But I don't! If the other players are in another timezone, they do their moves overnight and my time runs out before the end of the game. I was timed out of a game today despite having had a turn less than 24 hours before.

2. When you're playing through your turns, they don't go to the one closest to being timed out, they go to the most recently played game. I cannot find any option to set it to go to the game closest to being timed out. It is absurd there is no option for this.

3. There is no option to limit games to your own region.

4. The karma hits as penalties for the above are brutal. If you get hit with several games at once you can instantly be whacked all the way down to where you can only very slowly, ONE KARMA POINT AT A TIME, build back up to the point where you can even start or join games again.

The above is even more obnoxious when you consider that this is a PAID SERVICE and you can, through no real fault of your own, be locked out of a service you pay a subscription for. It doesn't pause while you're locked out with low karma, you're just missing out on what you've paid for.

It's really urgent that BGA
(a) implement an option to have the next game when you're clicking through them be the one where you've got the *least* remaining time, or where you had your last term the longest ago;
(b) let people set the region for games
(c) make it clear what the timeframes for games mean - apparently the "one move a day" option doesn't actually mean you get 24 hours to make a move, which is pretty counter-intuitive and also not what people want when they specifically select "one move a day"
(d) review the karma system so penalties for timeouts are not so utterly brutal and hard to repair.

I think you have some valid points, but your latest timeout was in this game: https://en.boardgamearena.com/table?table=546426654
It's a tournament game with playing hours set that I think are probably inappropriate for you. If you are in the same timezone as Melbourne, it looks like the clock counts down between the hours of 7pm and 7am for you. Also, because it is a tournament, your time is never replenished each turn, so it is very likely that you will run out of time.

The playing hours is a nice feature and very close to your region suggestion. The big problem is that many people seem to unwittingly join games with inappropriate playing hours.

Here are some suggestions you may want to vote for:

I've already got it set to the slowest two time options only, and it says the "hours" option is only for fast games.

Oh, I see what you're saying is it's a tournament game and they can set them to whatever hours they like and even if you've set it to "one move in 24 hours" and specifically "I never want to play a game faster than that" the specific tournament settings override that. Yeah, there needs to be a way to have it warn you if it's set in another time zone to yours and the clock isn't going to replenish.

BTW what do we do about the others?

- being able to set the "next game" shown to being the one with the least time remaining, or the one where you had the turn LEAST recently. At the moment if you have games about to time out it keeps showing you the ones where the other player played more recently. You can be trying to get through the turns quickly and if the other player in game A keeps having turns it'll keep returning you to game A, while game B times out.

- the utterly unbalanced and over the top penalties for timeouts, and the painfully slow mechanism for fixing them, while locked out of most of the BGA functionality - particularly when you're paying a subscription, so you're being prevented from enjoying what you've paid for extremely minor "transgressions".

Just to put this a bit into perspective: On all other turn based gaming platforms I know you lose immediately when your time is up, without any of your opponents having to do anything. Also I have played nearly 300 games here now and not a single opponent timed out. On other gaming platforms I see timeout rates between 10% and 30%.

Not sure how that addresses anything I raised.

It isn't. But I speculate that the karma system, that you seem to dislike (or at least the harshness of it), is precisely what leads to the very low timeout rate on this server. And I'm pretty happy with that. Meaning that I simply respectfully disagree with at least parts of your position.

How do we get the things above looked at and considered?

Specifically
(a) implement an option to have the next game when you're clicking through them be the one where you've got the *least* remaining time, or where you had your last term the longest ago;

Submit a suggestion through the bug/suggestions page.

And karma isn't hard to repair. There are plenty of short games on here that tend to finish in under 10 minutes.

I’m hosting a tournament right now and what annoys me is that there is NO REPUTATION PENALTY for going over your time limit and NO REPUTATION PENALTY for being the slower player when your game goes to the hard round time limit.

How are time outs for turn based games not causing a drop in reputation? How is making no moves any different than abandoning a game? Also, I can’t kick out a player so now they just play in every round, make 0-1 moves every 5 days and lose 0-1 and delay the whole tournament. Everybody else is done their games in 2 days or less and they now go to the 5 day limit. I put a rating requirement on the tournament to keep players like this away.
