Shout-out to Nekonyancer

Post by SjoerdSlagman »

In the process of playing yet another game (Hens in this case), so naturally the first thing I do is checking whether there is a tutorial.
To no-one's surprise it turns out the tutorial is made by Nekonyancer.

Nekonyancer, you're doing gods work!

They do good tutorials, I'm also usually pleased to find a Nekonyancer tutorial on a game I want to learn. You can message them directly, which is possibly more likely for them to see than posting in the forums though.

He's made over a hundred tutorials. His premium membership is entirely funded via tutorial creation.

Not only is he very responsive about making updated to them when requested, but he's also published a guide for other people to create their own tutorials.

I'm aware it's a person, but as I wasn't necessarily sure if it was a male or female person, I used they/them pronouns (I know this info is potentially on a player's profile, but I didn't want to look them up, and generally just go this way to avoid misgendering someone - it fairly often happens to me, as I'm a female, but often presumed to be male).

You guys are too kind ^_^;

I'm just a guy (male) with a little too much time on his hands.

Kayvon, I'd argue you've done a lot more work than I have! Each developed game probably takes 20 times as much work as a tutorial!

nik592, you're right. I never would have seen this forum post if nicotactac hadn't informed me. At the end of every tutorial, I write "If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send Nekonyancer a message," and I'm not lying! :)

I also use "they" to refer to singular subjects of an unknown gender. I found the practice strange at first, but I came around after I read Starsight, a novel by my favorite author, Brandon Sanderson. He features a lot of ungendered aliens in that book, an he uses gender-neutral pronouns for all of them. Even awkward ones like "themself."

Personally, I wouldn't mind if a new set of words were officially added to English, so we wouldn't have to jam square-shaped theys and thems into round grammatical holes. Perhaps we should follow Futurama's example and use "Shklee?" :)

I'm deeply indebted to Nekonyancer: he created whopping 51 tutorials (and counting) for me alone :)
Edit: 52 tutorials now :D

Probably, but I find when I'm already rewriting my speech to include a pronoun that typically refers to a group rather than singular, that's reasonably taxing on my brain so I'd guess other grammatical habits are likely to persist.

I don't know what the other person is talking about. Your grammar was totally fine. Verb always has to agree with the pronoun no matter the meaning behind it. "They do" works.
