Leaving in final turn

Post by Crines »

So someone at my table (https://boardgamearena.com/13/terraform ... =643827564) left just before the end. I had the win in the bag and because this person left, I got a tie and barely any elo.

Is this normal? Why dont I get the elo for a win? Pretty pissed off tbh.

Because trying to estimate whether a victory is certain or not before the end of the game is near impossible and not worth the effort.
Attempting it would probably create more problems than it would solve.

Just red thumb the guy.

Wait What ????

Determining who would win if a player quits in the final turn is NOT difficult.
Also, quitting in the final turn should be minus 80 Karms and minus 40 Elo. It's just unacceptable.

To the OP:

In TFM, if a player quits in the final turn, you should still get an Elo raise based on the game being 95% complete. Can you link to the game in question, because I do not understand why you wouldn't have received nearly the full Elo reward.

He did get ELO for winning against the quitter.

But the other players are tied.
It is weird and imo wrong that there is a change of ELO for being tied with someone under those conditions.

As for determining who is winning before the game ends, not it's not simple.
It would have to be game specific.
So the developer would have to spend time just for that instead of improving the game or making another one.
Most games have tons of points to be delivered in the last round either by design or just because some players are keeping some "big action" for last.

While there are situations that are obvious to a human, it is very difficult to characterize what is obvious and what isn't. Big difference of points but what cards does everyone still have ? Can they be played ? Is it sure they will be played ? Can any majority/first place bonus etc still be overturned ?

See how quickly it becomes a nightmare to program ?
And if you do that, people will still complain that their situation was obvious or wasn't or that it was a 63% chance of winning so the game should have changed the ELO counting a 63% chance of winning.

You are annoyed, we get that but coding won't solve this.

Anyway, before a game could do that, you would probably need more flexibility in the framework itself

Phoxtrot:

I agree with and understand what you are saying.

That being said, I reject the implied assertion that "difficult to do"
means we should not try.

Games can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If a human can look at a game for 5 seconds and determine that the winner is obvious, so can a moderator. And if the moderators have too much else going on, they just decline the review, or mark it for later review.
It's better to try than to not try.

This is truly a tremendously unreasonable ask. BGA hosts tons of games and the idea of having moderators manually review games is not feasible in the least. Do they need to have expertise in every game they review? What if they make the wrong decision? Will we have a court of appeals and a high judge to preside over specific cases? What about the end of the arena season - when will the ELO judgement come in and how will that affect final placements as well as people's decision to either park or play more? And all of that is not even getting into the financial ramifications of it.

I think it's safe to say this will never be implemented.
