clarification on moderation

Post by FrankJones »

Can someone please help me understand the moderation system?

I awoke one day to see I have been given a very severe penalty, without explanation, and without a moderation report, so I could not even dispute it.
In my profile it said, "minus 50 Karma and 72-hour chat ban because of game# [ game number]."

Okay, what does that mean exactly? I never say or do anything in the chat in-game that would warrant such a severe penalty. And shouldn't I have been given a reason and a moderation report in case I wished to dispute? I cannot even go back into the game to view the chat to see what I possibly might have said.

I have only had cause to report a player for in-game chat twice:

1) A player was being relentlessly vicious in the chat, using vulgar curse words, saying things about my family, and threatening violence. I clicked "report player", and nothing was done.

2) In another game, an opponent blatantly table-talked, essentially telling his partner what to do during the current hand. I politely requested that the player hold such remarks until AFTER the hand. The player reacted belligerently. I reported, and again, no action.

This seems very arbitrary and inconsistent.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Please note: I am NOT challenging any specific moderator. I am seeking clarification on the process.

Thank you.

I don't know if the moderation policy https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/Moderationpolicy may help you understand what's going on.

You can review the in-game chat by going to the game review (e. g. https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=666046067). There you can find a button for the chat (left side on a computer), which re-opens the chat window and what was written there.

Language is a source of misunderstanding. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery: The Little Prince) But it is also the source of understanding - it all depends on how you use it. :-)

Thank you, yes, I did not realize I Could review the chat.

SO, I did.

Here is the relevant policy:

Level 2: "light" insult or aggression Examples: st_p_d, id__t, l_s_r, dumb, imbecile, jerk, * you cheater, kingmaking, trash, learn to play, telling someone to quit BGA or the game... 1 day no-chat (+ reset Karma to 50)

Level 3: Direct Insult or aggression *, *, *, *, *, *, *, dog, rat, pig, goat, or any kind of threat... 3 days no-chat (+ reset Karma to 50)

PLEASE NOTE: This is just a copy and paste of the policy that is publicly posted, and I truncated the curse words anyway, just to be safe and ensure I do not penalized for quoting the policy here.

In the chat, I said to one of the players after a series of horrible plays so bad it seemed like kingmaking or team play:

"You *".

How is that a level 3 offense? That clearly falls into a level 2 category. Also, people have said MUCH MUCH worse to me and received NO penalty.

I don't get it. And I was never even given a moderation report to contest it and point out that what I said was at worse a level 2.**

*Moderator edit: please refrain from swearing on BGA, this is a family-friendly platform.
