In the game for which I posted a turn-by-turn review of the entire game, you won the bonus cards 11-6.

But, yes, if you're no longer finding the game enjoyable, there are plenty of pother games.

I am not premium player currently so can't not see my stats but i guess my average game score is 90+ points. There are a lot of 200/300 elo players who never even score a 90+ so this maybe give a idea how some players have very high win score. In many games people of the same skill level are put togethor to compete, but with wingspan a pro player can face everybody and therefore you get a relative high difference in win rate. Wingspan is a skill based game with a luck factor and that luck factor is getting very high if two strong players are facing each other, but the luck rate of wingspan is less relevant if a pro player is facing a player who has signifact less elo

Hey friend!

Don't worry about win % or ELO. I think it also helps to not look at the current visible score constantly. I think its more productive to focus on your own board if you want to get better. Try to consistently get more than 90 pts per game. Start by trying to consistently get 70 pts, then 80 pts etc...

Play as many birds as you can to get a feel for each one and which ones fit your preferred play style. This game definitely has a good amount of luck involved, but luck is good because allows players to catch up. Also, don't worry about bird tier lists. It can be helpful to get a general idea about how good a card is in a vacuum, but what's good for your game on your turn is a lot more variable. Like a ruddy duck on round 4 is probably going to be a bad card vs a ruddy duck on round 1 is a great card. That's an extreme example, but something to think about.

I like to play a lot of games with friends and we tend to be rather evenly matched. I find those games the most fun, but its definitely going to lower my win % and probably ELO. I would recommend trying to have fun and playing as many games as you can over worrying about your statistics. Statistics are good if have a large enough game base to identify your playing trends. If you focus only one numbers you are going to have a bad time and not make progress on improving as a player.

Those are my thoughts at least, not sure if its helpful.

Some high Elo players get consistent 100 points, and when i spy on their games, they simply do it with good birds lol. I think 85 is the milestone of a sucessful game when you play "on your own" and 100 when opponent gives you free resources.
It’s hard to be consistent because opponents can be very lucky and you can have trivial issues, such as terrible dices (thank you so much for getting rid of this in Wirmspan), drawing bad cards and so on.
I liked it more when it was a 3 players arena game because you could fight for second place even when the game was against you, now it sometimes feel like "who is the luckiest on draw and bonus" game.

I agree that luck adds a ton of variance to results and winning any individual game. However, I have a bit over 550 ELO at the time of this post (oh, it can swing big at times) and I would say you absolutely can partially mitigate luck with smart plays whether that's in the form of resource denial, a handy brown egg bird when the opponent starts to develop a good grasslands, and not chasing a round goal, or goal card to the detriment of overall points. Play with a points focus and nothing else and work with what the game gives you.

Another important thing to a good ELO and higher win % (mine is only around 65% with around 1500 games played) is stick to 2 player games. Obvious, right? Your odds are better and you won't be the victim of the losing guy playing before you in a round screwing you over from catching up to the lead player. Situational awareness is key in this game as it is in so many other games and life in general lol. Play enough games and you'll see players again and a good memory will lead you to remember their individual card preferences and you can use that to your advantage, knowing that you can get to a card you want in the tray later in the round. Small things like that really add up. Even games that have no drawn cards or dice (On Mars comes to mind) still has some luck involved in the set up. Games need some semblance of luck or it wouldn't be have high repeat playability.

I'm also glad we don't have access to the expansions. I own the physical copies and they add so much additional luck and variance that it's way harder to maintain a good winning percentage.

Games like Chess and Go are considered highly replayable, but the only form of luck you see is who goes first.

Is the house finch THAT good? Probably not. Obviously the most precious resource in this game is action cubes. I HATE drawing ONE card when I have a playable water bird.
Late to the party, but yes, house finch is that good. For me, there are several cards that are auto-snap on the first round, even if I have water birds in my starting hand. They include (in this order): 1. anything that gives food only to me in grassland (towhee, crows), 2. any tuck and draw in the grassland (including finch), and 3. Extra card draw in the wetlands (especially draw 2 and keep 1).
Depending on my food draw situation, I would also single draw extra food in the forest birds and/or hummingbirds. If I have extra card draw in the wetlands, I might also snap a tuck and lay egg birds.
The above is in the arena setting, obviously the powerful birds that arena excludes, are also auto-snaps.

Addendum: I just played (and won) a game where I spent the first five (!) turns single taking a card from the display. Not the strongest opponent, but still. https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=718534337

Seems like friendly games have a negative impact on my winning % (even when i win the friendly game). If i compare my wins with my loses it seems like my current winning % is not reflecting correctly, anybode with the same experience?
