Lack of coolness and friendliness

Post by Fetzenflieger »

Dear Crew-Players!
I consider myself a well-experienced crew-player, but not on a pro-level. I like the game and enjoy it a lot, because I think the combination of a trick-taking game with a cooperative game is quite unique. However, there is an issue here on bga, that annoys me a lot and I'd like to share it with you.

Most of the players I encounter are even more skilled than i am. Every once in a while someone makes a simple mistake. It can be me, it can be another player. With simple mistakes i mean: Fogetting to comm a problem, picking the wrong card, getting the order confused, ... things like that. It happens to everyone. I think, it is in the nature of the game. You apologize, shuffle the cards and start over, no big deal. But here on bga, if you make a mistake, you immediately get hate from the other players and on the second occasion they tell you, that they don't want to play like this, implying that you are an idiot, and run.

I find that rude and not enjoyable at all. I don't make the same experiences in other games.

How do you think about it? Have you experienced the same thing? Please let me know.

BTW: When The Crew was rather new, there were a lot of players who were very generous with advice and explained specific tactics: Like "If you don't comm, that means you don't have a problem". Where have they gone?

Cheers!

Are you playing live or correspondence mode? I play correspondence only and my experience is much better with coop games than what you describe.

100%.

Just a few players are online. And if you get a game, at least one person is toxic and always saying: 'Why this? Or why that?' And then they just quit the game. These players really need some fresh air, because normal people will all vanish because of this behavior.

I play coop games for fun and I am here for fun. But these people, they don't have fun. This is toxic pro gaming behavior. It's very unfriendly, not only, but also for new players. Not a great start I have to say.

Here is what I would suggest for people which like to comment the plays (like myself) but would want to improve on that, since the limit between giving advices and being toxic can be really hard to find:
- play higher missions. The amount of comments between mission 10, and missions 32+ of deep sea is completely disproportionate (and that's good). Since you need a way higher level of plays to play those high missions, commenting what others players are doing and giving advise is much more apprecied there. Those who play casually would maybe want to highroll those mission once, but if they are still playing, would most likely prefer some easier missions anyway
- you can give one comment about the plays of others, but if no one answered you, really rarely give a second comment on that game
- if you are playing with 99- elo players, don't hesitate to ask others people if they want advices or not. Some rare one will said yes
- always put priority on the game. Discuss while others are choosing their mission. If the discussion seem to long, rarely goes in private but often just talk with them after the game
- and please the most important... Stop asking useless questions. If someone trump a trick which contain a task and that lose the game, they just made a mistake, and should be already angry against themselves. Just adding 'why?' add nothing to it, which answer you expect to have? If the situation is more complex, you could ask, but still often there is no point of asking

I love what Romain said and agree with it.
I think that I find the more experienced players just appreciate you acknowledging the mistake, this lets them know that you know your error and you’re skilled but just made one f those common errors .
Otherwise, those great players who were so nice are at 2k+ ELO and often at Deep Sea =)
What’s left are the ones who aren’t so great who have strong opinions.

Suggestion: Keep track of coop style of play to maximize game play pleasure.
Keep a coop stat, based on feedback from other players. The spectrum is fun vs serious.
Could be a self vote kinda thing, could be voted by other players, could be external spreadsheet.

total of 10:
10 fun + 0 serious = happy with chaos, don't know the rules? no prob.
8 fun + 2 serious = please know how to play, playing for fun, errors expected
6 fun + 4 serious = want some effort to win, errors ok
4 fun + 6 serious = please think through each move, errors tolerated, winning is important
2 fun + 8 serious = perfect play expected, errors will end the game, winning is a must
0 fun + 10 serious = don't speak, you are a robot, errors will destroy the world

When starting a game, I can filter on reputation / how frequently they loose connection.
When starting a coop game, I'd like to filter on fun vs serious

It's not my case, but people could be in differents category, ie being fine with playing with beginners and tryharding.

Then you can already have groups. I know for some weird conventions in hanabi, there was some groups created for it. But on my knowledge that's the only game which did that (that require to have a popular game + having strong change of playstyle in that game)(I really rarely saw differents interpretations/playstyle for the crew. I know low comm has differents meaning depending of people, I know that when you need to win first and last trick, and comm p2 solo, then play y4 the interpretation of people is different, but they are the exception).

The elo before was kinda doing it, at least for the serious part. If you wanted to play seriously, you would just limit your table to high elo players. But that created the worst community for the website.
About the fun aspect, you got the friendly mode, but just seeing that a table is in friendly mode is pretty hard since that's not what I check when joining a game.

You have a part of people which don't like to think much, think they are the best players, like to comment other's players plays, and are just unfun to play with. They are not playing the highest missions, maybe because they will be criticised (since they are not good). Where would you put them?

With your ranking, players with 2 or 0 fun will get really few people I believe.

Another thing I'm afraid, is if the fun players (which i believe usually play less) are enough numbered. Because if it's not the case, you would not find people wanting to play like that, and that spectrum would do nothing.

It's a lot of criticisism, but I don't believe that would work like that.
