As someone who often sends a "GG" or alternativly "thanks for the game", it's not as much an compliment to good gameplay, as it is a thank you for good sportsmanship.
To me, GG means
-thank you for not disconecting halfway trough the game.
-thank you for not teaming up with annother player against me for no specific reason/king making.
-thank you for being here so i have people to play against.

If you're a *, i won't say annything.
I don't think a lot of people send it as sarcasticly as you may interpret it as.

I like a "gg" at the END of the game and see it as being polite. The early "gg" though I hate and I have begun doing a "personal reasons" red-thumb to those who "gg" too early. Very annoying and arrogant, IMO.

All valid reasons, but it's still a pet peeve. Wait until the game actually ends!

I will say something in certain games at the point where it is impossible for myself or my opponent to win. I don't see the point in pretending that the game isn't over because some book keeping is necessary, and turn based I may not be around to say it.

Its perfectly fine to have a pet peeve over this, as it is over 'gg', as long as you remember that a pet peeve is by definition something that irritates you but which you are not *justified* in being irritated by.

That's not what a pet peeve is. It's just something an individual finds particularly annoying to them. It could be totally justified.

Frankly, I don't like the premature "gg", either. It doesn't matter the reason. Saying it early generally ruins the intended polite gesture regardless. Just wait till the end, please. Thanks.

As far as the OP, clearly the intention is the be polite, not to truly comment on the nature of the game itself. When I have a really hard fought game, I write a message related to the outcome, such as, "You played that last move perfectly, gg." So, I'd say you're reading too much into it.

I think it depends, I agree kind of but also disagree. A gg in a turnbased game when someone plays their last move knowing the outcome is set (if it is already obvious to everyone at the table) i don't mind. If they have done some wonder move to nick it at the death then yeah, wait until the end. Real-time play I think it's polite to wait until the end definitely. Unless the loser has been a harassing chat-spammer during the game in which case yeah drop it early as an ironic gesture.

I wouldn't red thumb someone just for an early gg, but as part of a wider unpleasantness? Yeah I guess it can feature.

gg/thanks for the game are polite, as are the "good luck" and "have fun" lines. I think most people intend them kindly and interpretting them otherwise is kind of a reflection on the recipient rather than them. I think you can usually tell though when someone is trying to be nasty with it, there are usually other things to go off too.

If losing a game upsets someone enough that a polite gesture offends them it might be time for them to step away from the game and reflect on why that is. A boardgame should be relaxation. Sfaik one of the signs of addiction / obessive behaviour e.g. among gamblers is letting a fun activity become more than that and getting angered/ having irrational emotions in response to it. Particularly if it is happening frequently. We used to have TV adverts here "if the fun stops, stop". It applies equally to BGA and other online games.

I can understand where you're coming from. I think this is subjective. I might sometimes add it wasn't such a good game for me after someone says "GG".
