Increase the Real Time converted to Turn Based inactvity timer limit to at least 12 hours

Post by TomKy »

How about increasing this inactivity limit?

I also noticed this older post discussing the issue about the limit of a few hours after turning a real time game to turn based. Real Time/no time limit games getting cancelled after a break - is that normal or is it a bug?

This happends when you change a real-time game into a turn based after agreement for all players.

Problem is that if you are going to play some big and heavy lenghty board games, that you wanna play fast with friends, or with some random people. But sometimes you doesn't finish that game and there's a good option to turn it to turn based. Problem is that if you need to shut down because you need to sleep or work, 4 hours or so doesn't cut it. But setting it to atleast 12 hours should allow your to take an action within that time frame.

I think this need a change. There is some lengthy games, such as Barrage, Maracaibo and many other lengthy games this feature is handy and there will be some new games that could take as long as almost half the day to finish which could need this break mechanics to work because sometimes you won't be able to finish it in one sitting and continuing the next day or weekend would be desirable option. Most likely many games would wrap up quickly in the next day, or perhaps within a few days or next weekend. 8-)

Game being shut down due to inactivity while you sleep or until the next day is really annoying. These games is going to be played to finish in most cases.

If you're playing with people you know, why not just do turn-based to start with? Why do you need real time at all? This should only be an issue when playing with random strangers because you can't make them commit to finishing in one day.

The discussion on https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26761 was not "about the limit of a few hours after turning a real time game to turn based", and to my experience this is not how BGA handles this.

First of all, that post was especially about playing a game in friendly mode. Friendly mode is described by BGA as "no time limit", but in fact it is not. As the OP wrote there, the game had been automatically ended due to inactivity after some hours.

This can be prevented by starting the friendly mode game as turn-based. In order to do that, set the table to turn-based before you switch it from normal mode to friendly mode. This is a bit difficult to handle, so the easier way would be to start a game in friendly mode and then switch to turn-based via the hamburger menu in the top right corner - but then you need the approval by all players. Either way such a game will not be automatically ended before 40 days of inactivity.

Each turn-based game follows this limit of 40 days of inactivity (if not ended by the players before in any way), no matter if it is played in friendly mode or normal mode.

The reason I also brought this up, is because I mostly play real time and I play with random people since having turn based games is not preferable too me, I cannot stop thinking about the games I play because really dislike to play dogslow games and having them in background ( even though 95% is just doing fine with playing turnbased due to busy lives, I'm also busy, but sometimes I'm able to play long sessions on weekends).

I don't like to play on friendly mode from start since I like to play games with elo rating if possible.

Getting random people to respect to play real time when you set it to turn based is not going to happen in most cases. And that includes games that take quite some time to finish. When a game is started in real time, those playing are motivated to play it to finish. Its a challenge sometimes with long games such as Maracaibo, since an emergency can happen and it takes sometimes 2-3 hours to finish in one go.

If a game started in real time game would have a 40 day limit after converting to turn based or whatever limit, it would nice as long you don't wake up to an aborted / interrupted game next day. But the 4 hour limit is a real deal breaker when playing behemoth games such as TI4, as I think some of those games in real time would realisticly be completed in different 2 sessions if real time if not everyone is committed to play 4-8 hours and there's a higher chance someone must pull the plug and a 4 hour limit non action limit make such a game not possible to sleep over, therefore a minimum of 12 hours would be nice.
