This particular case presents an especially weak argument for skipping. The person skipping had no other way to win.

Maybe the argument for skipping is strong, but your understanding of the reason is incorrect.

In a single player game, if I've obviously lost, I tend to let my opponent play out their win if they are playing reasonably quickly (I think that's considered polite), but if they are playing very slowly, I'll just resign so I don't have to sit around waiting to lose. (Similarly, I won't spend lots of time trying to maximize my score in a clearly winning position).

In a multi-player game, resigning isn't an option. At 94% complete, just waking away and letting the others finish isn't an option either (eventually it will be my action again, and I need to be there to take it). The only option (until someone runs out of time) is to sit there patiently and wait for the other players to finish their turn before finally getting to do something else with my precious time.

Maybe the "offending" player wasn't trying to "score an easy win", but just didn't want to spend any more time waiting for other (seemingly absent/distracted) people to take their actions so he/she could eventually lose.

Completely with you Groovenstein

The cancelling player acted unforgivably

The player who went slightly over did nothing wrong. If they'd repeatedly gone over, then maybe, but even then use the chat before cancelling!

Seriously, who cares? You know you don't actually get anything by winning a game on here, right?

IF you are getting upset over something that is completely meaningless and has zero value, you should find a new way to spend your spare time. If you are getting emotionally attached to the outcome of a game that means nothing, to the point of getting upset about it, you are already losing more than you will ever win from a game of Wingspan.

Who cares? Players care. When people play a game in which score is kept, and the goal is to have a higher score, many players wish to be correctly awarded a win when their skill and decisions have resulted in a winning position.

Why do you care enough - about a topic that supposedly does not interest you - just to come on here and say, "who cares"?

Who are you to decide for others whether they "get anything" for a win?

Who are you to say the outcomes of these games are "meaningless"? Seriously?

Is there some secret way to get paid by BGA for playing a game?

Seriously, if you are getting upset over a game where you get nothing for winning, you really shouldn't play. If you lack such a basic level of emotional control, then online gaming really isn't a good hobby for you. Adding anger and stress to your life over something that will never pay you any dividends is not worth it.

Again, who are you to say that someone else "gets nothing" for a win? Why do you need to impose you value and opinion on others?

The irony is, you come across as very superficial, by implying that anything other than monetary gain constitutes "nothing". Doing something well, whether it's a board game, an athletic contest, a team sport, a game of pool, darts, or whatever, can be meaningful to different people for different reasons, regardless of any monetary gain or lack thereof.

Some people strive to excel at what they do, and you want to throw shade on them because you personally don't see value in such a thing? Really? How about you do what works for you and let others do what works for them, and leave your attitude and judgment at the door?

Personally, I don't understand what you possibly gain from being judgmental and negative on this topic, or interjecting your judgmental opinion in a condescending manner. But, you're entitled to do so, as long as it doesn't violate the BGA code of conduct. (And at the moment, I'd say you're skating that fine line very closely by implying people lack emotional control merely because they care about the outcome of a game. Not to mention, being generally disruptive toward a legitimate discussion.)

BGA's admins work very hard to ensure the fairness and integrity of the game results. Why? Because people rightfully care about the outcome of competitive endeavors they participate in. There is nothing wrong with that. BGA wards achievements for various accomplishments, and for some people, those matter, regardless of whether you think it should matter. If people gain a personal sense of accomplishment from reaching a specific Elo or specific rank on the leaderboard, who are you to trash their accomplishments and say it doesn't matter, or say that they are emotionally unstable for caring about this?

Strategy games incorporate a variety of skills that translate well to other areas of life: Critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, planning, resource management, etc. There is nothing wrong with caring about winning while honing those skills.

We have "friendly mode" here on BGA for various reasons, one of which is that it's a good game setting for people who don't care about such things. But the vast majority of games seem to be played in competitive mode rather than friendly mode, so in a sense, you're dumping on everyone who plays games here on BGA in competitive mode. And why? What are you gaining from this? Let people do their thing.

Repeatedly posting in a thread that the entire topic is pointless - because (you believe) no one should care - really comes across as trolling. Why comment at all? Do you interject into philosophical conversations to tell people that their conversation doesn't matter and they none of them should care unless one or more of them gains money from doing so?

Here's one option that I use when someone repeatedly demonstrates that rational discourse with them is impossible or pointless:
https://boardgamearena.com/forum/ucp.ph ... &mode=foes

Prevents me from saying something in a lapse of discipline that will get me moderated.

You maintain your sanity and they think they've "won" because you never respond to their blocked posts. Win-win.
