Renegade vs sheriff and vice

Post by jaxjardiin »

I recently played a game where I was rene. I'm against the vice and the sheriff. Sheriff has one HP, the vice has two HP. The vice gets a beer, making the game unwinnable for me, unless I get the perfect draw to kill the vice.

Now the question here is, why shouldn't I target the one HP sheriff and guarantee their loss? Is it against the rules or good sportmanship? Because that's what I did, and got instant feedback in the chat and couple of red thumbs :D

I don't mind the red thumbs (each to their own), but to me, playing that beer is a bad play, because it assumes that the renegade hands the win to the opposing team in an unwinnable scenario. IMO the correct play is to either just discard the beer completely, or conceal it within their hand. Two HP vice is suddenly much more appealing target than the one HP sheriff.

You’re not supposed to « give » the game to anybody, just trying to win it for yourself. Killing the sherif in that situation means you lose instantly, so yeah it’s bad sportsmanship and a logical « red thumb ».

You lose by killing the sheriff in the situation described. Sportsmanship implies that your actions are aimed at winning, not losing.

Also I see you're playing in Arena mode, where the ELO system in BGA should motivate you to care, if not about gaining points, then at least about minimizing your losses. The system works in such a way that if you're a renegade, you lose fewer points when the sheriff wins (in 6 players game).

There are absolutely situations where I support and have even been the one, as renegade, to play against one team or another when a player has made it unwinnable for renegade without it making any strategic sense. These situations are extremely rare and exceptionally egregious and the other players at the table would side with renegade in those instances. Stuff like an outlaw targeting only the renegade in a 1v1v1 or a sheriff targeting renegade with everything they've got (jails, bangs, duels), all roles known and two outlaws at full health with range on sheriff.

What you're describing sounds nothing like that. The vice's role is to help the sheriff. The longer the game goes, the better the odds for the sheriff. Renegade has to kill vice before killing sheriff to win, so the healthier the vice, the more opportunities the sheriff has to heal. Not playing the beer as vice would be the bad play. Shooting the sheriff as renegade in that situation just seems petulant.

If you want to win you need to kill vice first and then sheriff if you kill sheriff first you lose
another reason why killing sheriff in situation like this is not smart is that if that player who killed sheriff as rene played a lot of games with one player who was outlaw it can be cheating or kingmaking
