What happens if no one excludes a timed-out player?

Post by Djazz- »

Hello, I organized a tournament with the option to exclude players who have exceeded their time limit. However, what happens if no player excludes another player who has exceeded their time? As you can see, they are already at -40 hours—will it go down to -10,000 hours and the game will never end, preventing the tournament from progressing?

Is there an option for the organizer to exclude players who have exceeded their time?

Thank you :)

Your tournament has a maximum duration of 5 days. If this time is reached and no one has been skipped, the player with the most time remaining will be the one to advance.

In some cases, a player never makes a single move, so there might be several players with the same amount of time remaining. In such a case, I believe that the player with the oldest account will be the one to advance. This is certainly what happens when someone decides to skip a player that is out of time.

Alright, thanks for the clarification :)

That makes this system quite inconvenient... If my tournament lasts 30 days, we would have to wait 30 days for that table to be freed 🤔 I thought that if my tournament lasted 5 days, the system would ensure it actually lasts 5 days or just a bit more 😬

Meaning there would be a maximum time calculated to play a round, like in real-time games for example, if you exceed the time, too bad, you’re eliminated and we move on to the next stage.

I am not sure how you use the word "tournament" here. You only ever define the maximum game time, you never define the maximum tournament time. Now I also don't understand how your above 2 sentences are inconsistent. When you set max time to 30 days, you wait 30 days, when you set max time to 5 days, you wait 5 days, what's the deal? Whatever you wanted to say, it is not clear to me.

Anyway, having the option to expell timed out players right away automatically would be very cool. However, I already anticipate a lot of players complaining they'd rather have finished the game. But as an option for tournament organizers, this could work and it solves the very problem that the OP is describing.

:o Ah, I see! That completely changes my understanding of how a tournament is organized. I thought that when I created a tournament, choosing “5 days” meant 5 days for the entire tournament. But in reality, it’s 5 days per game.

Thank you for this detail, it will change how I organize a tournament that I wanted to be short.

This whole multiplayer thing is a big issue currently with the website. A player can unfairly take advantage of kicking out another player, since in this case it is account's age that determines the order of the remaining players.

People may even do that without realizing, because the site is not very communicative on this topic. I don't think account's age is mentioned as a metric anywhere on this website, which seems very shady from them. Imagine if in a sports event a qualification metric was kept hidden to the public, letting people wonder how the advancing team or player even gets chosen in those cases. That wouldn't even be legal.

An easy solution would be to simply make the decision to kick out a player an unanimous vote by the other players (which is how you would naturally assume it works in the first place). Unsolvable dilemmas would still arise sometimes, but at least a player who is winning both by game state and by remaining time would always be able to defend their position by voting 'no'.

There is no reason that a single person should be able to decide what should be a collective decision. When you kick out a player, you are not just punishing that player, you are punishing every other player in the game even though those people didn't do anything to deserve this.
