I've never heard of a penalty chat loss because of low Karma from running out of time. If someone's Karma gets knocked down to 50% because of being moderated in a forum post or for inappropriate remarks during in-game chat, yes, a 24-hour (or more) chat loss is applied.

You cannot chat if you are below 50%...I was just playing a game, playing what I thought was reasonable time, nearly finished and got booted for going over. Got a message "GG but there is a reason I was playing Fast," after getting booted immediatley. What?...because you can't win playing against a person with a brain who takes an extra 15 sec. to make a strategic decision? GFU!

If you joined a game with a fast speed, it's on you to play fast.GoCougs83 wrote: ↑25 March 2026, 10:38 You cannot chat if you are below 50%...I was just playing a game, playing what I thought was reasonable time, nearly finished and got booted for going over. If I signed on for a fast game, I expect a fast game, maybe I've got real life time constraints that you are messing up by slowing the game down.
Plus I would argue the person with the brain would be able to make faster strategic decisions...
Re: Karma is Extremely unbalanced
As others have mentioned. Very easy solutions. First play with your friends to get karma back. Then. Stop playing real time if you cant play fast enough. Real time players give little leeway. For obvious reasons. Learn to play turn based. Yes it is slower to finish a game. But chances of timing out are very slim and shouldn't happen.

You, Elo 100, were playing a 500 Elo player. I don’t think they got to 500 because they “can’t win playing against a person with a brain who takes an extra 15 sec. to make a strategic decision.”GoCougs83 wrote: ↑25 March 2026, 10:38 You cannot chat if you are below 50%...I was just playing a game, playing what I thought was reasonable time, nearly finished and got booted for going over. Secondly, the game took 21m… it was their turn for 4m22s and your turn for 16m12s. That’s a little more than an extra 15 seconds, don’t you think?
Finally, you weren’t “nearly finished”; the game was only 75% over. I don’t blame them at all for wanting to play fast and being upset you couldn’t or wouldn’t.
Fast real-time Wingspan isn’t your jam. There’s no shame in it, but there’s also no sense in getting upset over it. Don’t play fast. Simple.

Karma is your "BGA reputation". It shows others that you’re a reliable player with a stable connection and a respect for the gamer's etiquette. Even with a good reason for leaving, it’s a bit of a bummer for the people you’re playing with.
How it works: To keep games moving, if your timer runs out, your opponents can choose to skip your turn. We know life happens, but leaving a game early or being skipped does affect your Karma. Your first time is just a friendly warning, but repeated instances shortly after will result in a -10 or -20 Karma penalty.
If you’re still learning a game, dealing with spotty Wi-Fi, or just need more time to think, try joining "Turn-Based" games, slower-paced tables, or Friendly Mode.
After receiving a penalty, every time you finish a game normally, your Karma score will slightly increase. It takes a few completed games to "wash away" the impact of one bad game, though this depends on how low your Karma went.
Here are a few tips to help your Karma back up:

- Turn-Based Games: These give you days to move instead of minutes, so a brief internet outage won't hurt your score.
- Friendly Mode: These tables often have more relaxed rules regarding time.
- Simple/Fast Games: Playing quick games (like 6 nimmt! or Can't Stop) is a faster way to rack up "completed games" and boost your percentage quickly.
Re: Karma is Extremely unbalanced
The way karma works is a bit strange. Someone can have something bad going on in their life and as a result have their karma go down to zero in a week. Whereas a person who occasionally quits or stalls games in a bad sportsmanship way will still have their karma close to 100.
I think most people would agree that the second person is the one you would want to avoid, yet the karma system doesn't work at reflecting that.

Agreed. In fact, people can quit or stall more than occasionally and still have 100 Karma. Takes very little time or effort to reclaim lost Karma.tbhp wrote: ↑27 March 2026, 03:38 The way karma works is a bit strange.
