Questions about Setting up 4p tournament

Post by ezeeckiel »

Dear Forum,

I would like to understand how to setup a 4p tournament that deals the best way possible with non-active players.
So far, I've participated in only one 4p tournament, (the Asia Seat for WSBG).

First question :
Does the organizer have a power to handle non active games ? And if the game is canceled, who wins ?

2nd question : if players cannot eject a non active player. So what happens ? and when? Who decides that the game will go no further ?
About the scoring, is the leading player winning the match in case of a elimination tournament ? And in a swiss tournment each other player gets some points ?
If then can eject, same question... who wins ?

I'm guessing the swiss system works better with large amount of players, with possibility of kicking out a player. And then, based on the results, a "final" phase could gather the best players in a non-kicking elimination phase. I assume the best players also involve more in respecting the pace of the game, or at least write something if they cannot play for a while.

Any thoughts about that ?
Maybe links towards info ?

Once the tournament begins the organiser has zero control.

When setting up the tournament you decide how long each match will last (10 days, 15 days etc.)
You can choose whether to allow players to kick those overtime or not.
If someone is kicked they get 0 tournament points and the rest of the players share points for =1st.
If the game ends because it reaches time (10 days, 15 days etc.) then the player with the most remaining thinking time wins. 2nd most thinking time remaining is 2nd, etc.
Game state is never taken into account, only thinking time.

BGA guides you through the setup making it easy. I'd recommend being generous with game length. Too many tournaments have half of their games decided by time.

Thank you Sam for your comprehensive answer,

I get it.
Allowing kiccking seems the most reasonnable, with a sufficient length.

I would advise against kicking unless only one person is eliminated in direct elimination. Else it can be frustrating. As for swiss i guess it matters less.
