I never should have been an Earth Guru in the first place unless friendly games were counted. And even if I do not lose my guru status immediately, I should have lost it by now. I barely play. And I've never played high volume in any 30-day or 3-month period.
Friendlies are counting. It's hard to say exactly how long you take to get demoted but given Heat has 213 gurus we can assume it's at least a few months.

With votes, people will get a vote who are no longer gurus because the voting period is normally open for 3 months. But you can see how low the interaction is with votes, my Heat suggestion has 55 votes, there's probably been around 300 gurus over the last 3 months. On top of this is 55 is actually high, because the new expansion was released for Heat since the last Arena season, so it was posted about on the guru wall, on Discord, the keep Arena the same only has 29 votes, which is more in line with the number you'd normally see if a new expansion hadn't just released. So you can see a very low % of gurus are actually interacting with the Arena vote, and that's because a number of them likely don't care/even know what gurus/Arena even is.

I actually agree with the principles written here that gurus shouldn't be based off Arena itself, because then Arena becomes self-fulfilling that players will keep voting for the same format, but having mostly players who don't care about Arena is not ideal either, when the main purpose of being a guru is to be able to vote on the Arena format. The solo games counting for example is silly, because say the site ended up with even more solo players, you could get 80-90% of gurus end up being solo, who have no interest in Arena, and have Arena formats being decided by a handful of people, because most players get no say. And in terms of sheer # of games played, non-solo players are always going to struggle to compete with solo players when playing solo can play in 20% of the time the way most players are playing the game.

I actually think the 30 day period used for guru status is too short. It should probably use a longer period to assess like 90 days. The issue with 30 days, and again I can see this at Heat, is you get too many players who will play say 80 games and then never again, and again are they really gurus over the players who play 50 games every month with 2000 games played? You want your gurus to be the players actually invested in the game surely?

Have at least 100 other people played more?

I've been a guru for games after literally playing (and losing, if I remember correctly) my first game. Sometimes "playing a lot" is not that much.

The same reason why you don't want guru status to be based only on Arena plays can be applied to support why solo games should also count. Playing solo doesn't mean you're not interested in Arena. Likely? Maybe, but it shouldn't be taken for granted.

However, if the FAQ says only ranked games count, and solo (or other friendly games) do actually count, something must clearly be fixed.

Given the player pool and quantity of games played of this game, I would say it's highly unlikely my ranked games were in the top 100. Close to 0.00 % possible.

The far more likely explanation is, it is counting Solo games.

For one of my games, I recall attaining guru status after playing a binge of solo games.

The problem with it though is that Arena itself can never be solo, as it would defeat the point of competitive play, so you're biasing the gurus who pick the format towards a format that can never be selected. My feeling also, albeit this is of course feeling rather than something I can prove is most these players have no interest in Arena, they're just playing solo as it's something they can play quickly, often in about as much time as it takes to find a game. Which leads to the next problem that they have a massive advantage qualifying as gurus, you can play a Heat solo game in 10-15 minutes, it normally takes that long just to find an Arena game, and the games themselves are like 45 minutes.

Like I'm not exaggerating when I say there are more solo players in Heat gurus than Arena players, I'm not sure that's particularly healthy, particularly because it's an issue that gets even worse the more players there are. I actually suspect Heat gets affected one of the worst by this in terms of what it leads to the makeup of gurus because unlike a lot of games, most people aren't playing Heat at low player counts, the general perception is it plays best with 4-6 players (Arena is 4 player mostly as a compromise, it often gets put forward to change Arena to 5 player, but there's concerns over time to find games), so solo players have a massive advantage over most of the playing pool in terms of getting promoted to gurus, which would be less at say games where the Arena format is 2 player, and the time differential between solo and competitive is less. At Heat you can literally rack off 5 solo games in the time someone plays 1 Arena game, so it's no surprise then that the gurus ends up being like 50% solo players, who there's no sign have any interest in Arena, because eg. they never comment/post, never put forward Arena suggestions and the like.

It definitely is counting solo games, when I look at your profile, you're playing quite a lot once counting solo. You've played 61 games in the last month, given Earth is similar to Heat, ie. it's not a 10 minute game, that doesn't surprise me as qualifying you for gurus. What concerns me a little looking at your games, is a number of your solo games don't even complete, they're abandoned before they finish, that would be even more concerning if these games are counting, because it would mean all you need to do to qualify for gurus is open a solo game, abandon on turn 1 and do that a bunch of times to get promoted to gurus, which would obviously be a total nonsense, and just another reason that friendly games should not qualify you for gurus.

None of my solo games are abandoned.

I have friendly mode games against a hotseat player that are abandoned. In those games I am doing bug-testing.

Earth is not a 10-minute game, but real time Earth games are usually 20-30 minutes (Still reasonably fast), with a large player pool, and with 10 thousand games played a month and 600+ games in progress at any given moment, so, I definitely agree it is counting my solo games.

Counting games to options outside of the Arena format keeps the vote from being locked to that mode, but limiting that diversity to actual Arena options is a reasonable ask given the voting content. Even beyond that, solo is just way too abusable.

But yes, the leading concern should be addressing the discrepancy between how Arena is working vs how it's said to be working.

So I looked into the raw numbers on this. Currently there are 215 Heat gurus (not sure how it's jumped 2 since a few days ago, but that's another topic), 2 are the developers for the game. By my count there are 70 players currently in Heat gurus who have either entirely or mostly played solo games. So it's like 1/3.

What is even stranger are these accounts:

https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=92411254
https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=92829398
https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=90052907
https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=90105152
https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=98480354

According to the record these accounts have never played a game of Heat, how can they be in gurus? In fact I have just picked out the accounts with 0 Heat games played, there's probably another 20 accounts with sub-50 games played where it seems very dubious they could have ever played enough games to qualify for Heat gurus. So something else is going wrong in terms of guru promotion.

And to be clear, I know that shouldn't be enough games to qualify for Heat gurus, because here's an example of someone I know not currently in gurus https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=84294043, they played 58 games last month, so there is no world where anyone should be qualifying for Heat gurus with sub-50 games played ever.

It seems a bug report on this behavior is warranted.
