For now I have just added it to the report around friendly/solo games counting, which according to the FAQ shouldn't be happening. https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=214627

I could create multiple reports, but at the same time if they see that report they should see some of the apparent wider issues as well.

The thing is you have to think this is quite widespread, it's just very hard to get a full picture, because I imagine very few people are gurus for multiple games, particularly popular games.

I haven't been active much lately, but when I am I could probably nab it for several. Is there a way to see which games you've ever been a guru for? It would not surprise me if I've been a guru for around 4 of the popular games.

Given the number of gurus showing for various games, I'm wondering whether the guru list is in fact a historical list of all players ever to be a guru.

Someone posted a link (albeit a confusing one) earlier in this thread that can take you to the "view gurus" page.

That was if you were currently a guru, not if you had ever been one.

Not that I am aware of. Indeed, I don't see anything that even tells you what games you're currently a guru of, you only know because you get notifications from the gurus section of those games.

Even if that were true (I don't think it is, Heat has had way more than 215 gurus ever), it wouldn't really answer anything. Eg. it would make no sense how someone is in gurus with less than 50 games played to begin with.

This still leaves unclear why some games have so many gurus. I would expect the number to be 100. Maybe +1 or +2 or +3 for developers.

Because it's not just the last 30 days it's based on. I don't know entirely when the 30 days is judged, and how long you last in gurus, but for example say you qualified for gurus because between 1st February - 1st March you played 100 games, and then since 1st March played 0 games, you would still be in gurus. So it's not just a rolling list of the latest 100 players, that's why you get more than 100. I don't know the exact time you last, but can tell you it's over a month, and appears less than 3 months.

I actually think this part of it is correct, having it be roughly the most active players in say each of the last 3 months would be the best way to do it, because you want some continuity, you don't want so high throughput that you get no consistency.

I was hoping to answer this by seeing what the span was between gaining and losing guru status, but I lost guru status 58 days ago and you can only go back 60 days in the notification feed so I can't see when it began.

True, that does make sense, and explains the information we see.

Similar to Meeplelowda, I forget exactly how long I remained a guru for the one game I was a guru but no longer am one.

RazorOz wrote: 10 April 2026, 17:55 I actually agree with the principles written here that gurus shouldn't be based off Arena itself, because then Arena becomes self-fulfilling that players will keep voting for the same format, but having mostly players who don't care about Arena is not ideal either, when the main purpose of being a guru is to be able to vote on the Arena format. The solo games counting for example is silly, because say the site ended up with even more solo players, you could get 80-90% of gurus end up being solo, who have no interest in Arena, and have Arena formats being decided by a handful of people, because most players get no say.
I sometimes wonder, if BGA ist trying to funnel more people into arena by making non arena players Gurus.
I get, that they cannot just ask high level arena players for the Arena format, but why can't they just open voting to everyone that is interested and has played the game x times (5-10 maybe)? They already have the voting system in place, so I assume it wouldn't take that much to open it to everyone.
