Deleting my BGA account, just wanted to say GoodBye

Post by wannabe_polymath »

After years of online board gaming here, I am done.
Even leaving my premium subscription unused.
The people who maintain this website simply don't care about the users.
Even after so many years, the lagging issues have not been fixed, especially complex games like Wingspan keep getting random errors.
Almost every other day, there is some downtime.
Besides all these basic bugs, their random number generator is extremely poor.
There is practically no benefit to high ELO players if the games do not follow basic Gaussian distribution of dices.
Its a lose lose scenario in the arena, win 10 games with hardwork, ELO jumps by 20 points, lose one game due to poor luck, ELO drops by 40 points.
Moreover, they do not admit publicly but there are hidden mechanisms coded inside the games to make it more interesting and increase the engagement.
For example, for the birds which pick food from the birdfeeder in wingspan, it happens a bit too often that all possible dices roll except the one compatible with the word, I have analyzed my 500+ games statistically and the occurrence of these events is not random at all.
Weak players get high point bonus cards in last moves just to keep the engaged.
The management says that the code is open sourced in public, but how do we that whatever is in public repository is the same code that is deployed in the backend?
I have personally worked in gaming companies and almost all profit making companies (especially those who deal with card based games) try to tweak the games in some way or the other to make games interesting and keep low ELO users engaged; I won't be surprised at all if that is the case here.
Anyhoo, like it has happened with many other users in the past who have tried to point of these issues, either my post will be deleted by the admins or I will be banned.
I am not even sure if this post will exist once I delete my account or not, but still giving it one last try as I love the board games but hate this website.
Toodles!

You'll also be mocked by the supportive, unbiased community here on the forums. I'm sure they will take the opportunity to review your comments and address any concerns promptly.

Surely we're not supposed to take seriously the OP in this thread: Join date is TODAY. Total posts: ONE.

Yeah, I'm sure everything that player said is accurate and valid.

I don't know why I bother, but...

Volunteer developer here. I spend more time maintaining games here than I do playing games. It's over an hour a day, often much more.

I don't maintain Wingspan. That's maintained by a different volunteer. It's often a thankless job, so berating them for not volunteering enough time isn't an excellent approach.

Here's an analysis of half a million random numbers generated by BGA:
boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=15811&p=59122&hilit=bga_rand#p59122

The dice are weighted exactly as expected. Sorry about your bad luck.

I coded dozens of games for BGA. This is patently false.

The game code requests bga_rand(), a function that has no clue how the random number will be used. It doesn't know if a high number is good or bad. It doesn't see which player will use the result.
wannabe_polymath wrote: 28 April 2026, 13:31how do we that whatever is in public repository is the same code that is deployed in the backend?
Because when I make game updates in the code, I can immediately test them and see that the new code is in effect. It's the same code, conspiracy theories notwithstanding.

Also false. Your post wasn't deleted (see? I'm responding here!) and you weren't banned (not that you'd care -- aren't you leaving?).

I legitimately hope this response is helpful. I'm not a BGA employee, but I am an avid BGA game developer. Hopefully this sets the record straight.

Well, to be fair, the join date in the forums only reflects the first time you visited the forums. For example, your forum join date says 2024-Jun-29 but you’ve been a BGA member since 2020. You just apparently didn’t use the forums the first four years… and now we can’t stop you! And it looks like OP did in fact delete their account so there’s no checking their actual BGA join date.

But aside from that… mockery of the OP is warranted, due to the “concerns” they raise. Zero understanding of randomness, zero understanding of Elo, and most crucially, zero willingness to learn or discuss. I, for one, would have loved to see their “analysis” of their 500 Wingspan games and how the dice are weighted against the food that is “compatible with the word”, whatever that means. But now they have denied the world this treasure.

Oh well.

Quick reminder to all: this is not an airport, you do not have to announce your departure.

I also volunteer here, and I spend a lot of time each day helping the site.

I have never had any random errors playing Wingspan.
I have never encountered anything unusual in the RNG. Yes, sometimes I am very unlucky. I also likely have many dozens of times a day in which I do not experience any bad luck. We just don't really "remember" those events because they are mundane and uninteresting and non-memorable.

The OP's post is here but I was not able to bring up the profile.

Either way, the entire post is nonsense, just for the benefit of anyone else reading it.

What? Do you expect a benefit to high elo players? Why?
Moreover, they do not admit publicly but there are hidden mechanisms coded inside the games to make it more interesting and increase the engagement.
Yet it didn't make it more interesting for you? I guess you're too smart.

OK, then I'm announcing that I will stay (for now).
