Why does a non successful informer win, if community fails

Post by Rumpelelf »

I had a game where I informed successfully and the community failed.

https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=818572958

I ended with a score of -10. The second player did not inform. The game was counted as his win.

In the rules it is written under Community Infiltration:

„If any players are tied for
the highest score or no player has a score
greater than zero, all lose.“

What do I miss?

Unfortunately this is a limitation of the BGA framework. It is is not possible to 'set' a player as loser. Players need to be assigned a score and BGA will determine a winner based on that. In this case actually all players should lose, since an informer only wins in case of a positive score.

At the moment, until BGA updates the way winners can be determined, a hanged player will always be assigned a score of 0 (joy should be set to 0) and scores for informers are calculated according to the rulebook. If an informer gets a positive score they will win.

It's certainly disappointing for a hanged player to win over a negative-scoring successful informer! While I'm not totally au fait with the scoring myself yet, could any of the following be implemented if deemed better?

After a Community Infiltration:

i) Assign any hanged player a score of -100.

ii) Assign any successful informer with a final score of 0 or below a score of -100.

iii) If any successful informers have a score above 0 and are tied for the highest score, assign all players a score of -100.

iv) All scores below zero lose.

As far as I can figure out that something like should abide by the rules exactly. I believe other games on BGA handle things like this in a similar manner on the current framework.

After a Community Survival:

i) Assign any hanged player a score of -100.

After a Community Atrophy:

i) Assign all players a score of -100.

It's possible to assign scores like this and would at least rank losing players equally. However it will still not allow all players to lose, ie in that case it would be a draw and requires setting artificial scores which I'd rather not do. However given the number of reports about this it might be the lesser worse solution. I will give it some thought.
