How many games on BGA use AI "Art"?

Post by CeartGoLeor »

After a game with really obviously AI artwork was highlighted on BGA recently, there was some discussions with mainly a negative response to it.
THere were a couple of bugs/suggestion reports over it.

BGA's non-response seems like waiting for it to blow over. I'm still wondering how many games on BGA have AI generated imagery.

Do other users know?

I've noticed a couple handfuls of them that clearly have AI. I posted some links to BGG lists of known/confirmed by creator and/or reasonably suspected AI art games in one of the other threads. No list that I've seen specifically for BGA, but I haven't looked in a couple weeks. I noted a handful in one thread here, but I've seen a bunch more since. I don't care to try and find them again however after I've moved on.

Some of the slop models even have official artist pages / tags on BGG and some games use those in the artist field.

+1 to whatever the number was before. I just learned the new All You Can Eat Buffet and it's obvious AI art.

Thanks for looking into games that might have AI Art in them. I didn't know about Fall of Lumen or Nemesis Retalliation. I'll check into Golfie as well. The Nemesis one is disappointing as it seems like an interesting games otherwise.

I asked about All You Can Eat Buffet on BGG The publisher Mojito Studios said that there was no AI Art in it. I copied the response here:

" Hello!
The game doesn't contain AI-generated illustrations. As shown in the credits, all the artwork was created by the enormously talented Anna Meshchanova, whose portfolio you can find online on both ArtStation and Instagram"

They are lying. Or the "artist" lied to them.

A real artist wouldn't create this mystery vegetable, as just one example of nonsensical "art" on the cards:

The sausage card looks like a pile of poo, complete with stink lines.

That's capsicum (or bell pepper perhaps, depending on your locality). No mystery about it, that's what pieces of capsicum look like if you roast them on a grill.

Roasted peppers was my first thought, but maybe the issue is the art on the card just looks so fake. Your picture looks real, delicious, tasty, you can see the evidence they are actually real roasted peppers. The art on the card just looks ... terrible, for lack of a better word. It looks very fake, the char lines look painted on, nothing to indicate those actually came out of an oven or a grill.

Yeah, I figured they were trying for grilled peppers, but that's a rather poor rendering of grilled peppers. A human would have made it more recognizable and not a misshapen blurry mess.

Even beyond the general gen-AI look and feel, many of the food cards have odd creations that are characteristic of gen-AI and not human art.

My picture is a photo, the card is obviously someone's artwork. The char lines are in fact painted on. I'll give you that the card isn't the best artwork, and yes it could be better, but for me, it was recognisable. The complaint was it was a "mystery" vegetable. I knew exactly what it was (and apparently so did you, and lefalaf).

I've seen lots of subpar artwork on cards well before the advent of AI. I'm not saying the art is amazing here, but that doesn't automatically mean it's AI. I can't speak for what else is in that game as I haven't played it and the images on BGG don't show a lot (although they're all recognisable), but I haven't seen anything that's obvious AI (and I'm unclear why lefalaf wouldn't choose the most obvious example, rather than one that's just not great quality, but has no other obvious characteristics).

Also bear in mind, if you happen to be wrong, you are talking about a person's artwork, and you're being quite harsh. I mean, you can say what you like, but not all game publishers can afford to hire top tier artists, and there is something to be said for less experienced artists to get their turn too.

Fair points. It's definitely a mystery vegetable. I think it's fair to criticize the artwork though. It's just not all that good. Whether AI or human generated. If a simple photograph of a plate of roasted peppers looks that much better than the artwork on the card, I would rather just see a good quality photograph on each card.

Sure, there's something to be said for giving an up-and-coming artist a chance, but, if that is human-produced art ... I mean... I don't know a charitable way to say this. I'm just not sure that card artwork is indicative of someone who has a sufficient foundational basis in art technique.
