Good point, though I think the nuance polettix is bringing is very welcome.
Thus first and foremost, I really appreciate all the effort the admins/developers put into this website. We all enjoy it a lot, and with a lot of passion (which can be felt nicely in this topic).
I agree that this functionality would be really welcome.
I think there is 3 types of groups you can want:
- Completely public: simply concentrating people with same interest.
- Closed but public discussion: for example skill-based/friend-based groups for game joining, but interesting general discussions where you are happy for friends of friends to chime in from time to time
- Closed and private discussion: Used for tactics/team building in a tournament. Or discussing bit more private stuff with people you are closer to (though use internet care at all times! And for moderation admins/mods should be able to read.)
We've used different methods for moderating our Hanabi group, we have a private group here, but because of noticing this non-private after reply issue also tested with other methods. The problem is that other methods we often just not read, because this is the place where we often come, and checking the other place for a message every 3-6 weeks, you just stop checking. I think similar applies to tournament team groups.
In the last weeks 3-4 of my friends joined a group tournament (I think one of the nice big ones by Brisbane Roar), and started organizing their tactics. But weren't aware I, and with that their opposing teams, could read their tactics.
What I disagree with are the comments which talk about not being able to private talk about others/insulting. If you are saying something about somebody in private, you should say it in a way that you wouldn't mind that person reading it. Insulting others in private should be similar in sense of moderation as that what you say in public. What makes this site so special versus other gaming websites is the nice way in which people react to each other. On other websites I've had so many negative experiences with people insulting me simply because they loose a game. A bit more nuanced applies to longer disagreements between parties, where it's not just simple insulting but more complicated. Private groups shouldn't be a breading ground for spreading such issues.
To conclude: I think a fix on private group posts becoming public by any reaction or non-admin post would be one of the more welcome fixes/improvements (it feels like a bug not intended behaviour) to BGA for the more hardcore (social) players here. If this is not so easy, an intermediate solution of marking private as "semi-private", would be very welcome as this stops giving people a false sense of private communication.
