I thumbs down people for slow response times, time outs, or being a dick during the gameplay. The thing that really really irritates me, is that someone who is losing a game, can simply let themselves time out on the last hand, and you're left with no ELO points for your win if you expel them. That's when I wish I could leave a comment about the player and explain the bitch move they just pulled. This has happened to me a couple times today, and it makes me furious when it happens. TO put an hour into a game, only to have the opponent bail on me on the last turn, and leave me without my points, enrages me. A thumbs down does not adequately express how irritated I am with that player. If someone times out, what sthe deal with not getting my points? That's their problem, not my fault.

Both Dirtbag (love the name) and Minty13 (don't get it) have given great input. The trick with timing out is super lame and deserves more than a thumb down.
I only give downs to the ones that quit or are really unresponsive for no apparent reason.
They are a great deterrent though.
This sight is completely out-rocking BSW! :)

I think red thumbs provide valuable information -- if I don't enjoy playing with someone, for whatever reason, it's good to have some option way to keep track. Sometimes a player is very slow -- not slow enough to get time penalties, but too slow for my tastes. Sometimes a player simply plays by a style I really don't enjoy, like buying lots and lots of attack cards.

If enough other people dislike playing with that player, perhaps it is worth my knowing -- it allows me to check their game history to see why.

Maybe a better system would be TWO scores: thumbs up or down for public view, and personal notes we can record about each player -- that way I could give a thumbs up yet record that I don't want to play with them again because they take too long to play.

I also have a problem with the thumbs down.
Early on I had problems with my internet connections and was going on and off like a yo-yo.
That caused many time-outs and removals and I could not even apologize because my connection was down (again).
Since that problem was solved, I did not have a single time-out. However, I still get rejected because of that short time.
My thumb downs are at 5 with 39 games played, my exits are at 3 and time-outs at 10. There is a bias towards "not liking" if stats are like that also.
I would like to see these indicators removed if they have only happened in a short period of time.

I just got a random thumbs down. Kinda takes the fun out of the win. Why is it hidden who gave it to me? That makes a hit and run consequence free.

The thumbs down system is definitely flawed and needs to be changed.

Some users give you thumbs down because they loose the game. Some give thumbs down because YOU loose the game.

Some users give thumbs down because in a 35-minute game, you had to run to the washroom for 2 minutes (no other delays nor time penalties). Some give it because you made a pun they groaned at.

What's worst, a number of these thumbs-down givers no longer play on Board Game Arena; they left 6 months or more ago, yet the unjustified black mark they placed on you lingers forever.

See my next post, where I propose one solution to this problem is that at the beginning of every calendar month, one thumbs down is removed from your record.

I couldn't agree with you more, Hansbro. But at least with times out and exits, I believe it reports only recent activity, like the last 60 days only. Thumbs down stick on you forever, I suppose even if someone who had his account banned because he was breaking guidelines thumbed you down, that stays even though he is gone.

If someone is insulting or otherwise breaks the policy, then report him. If someone quits the game or times out, then a public record for this already exists on the system. I would request that the admins suspend/remove the current thumbs-up & -down system until it can be fixed.
:P

I can understand why we shouldn't be able to see who thumbed us down, lest a flame war begin. But could we at least see what game we received a thumbs down in? I received one today for the first time ever and I have no idea what I did or which game it came from.

Yes. This is what needs to happen. Or you should be limited to one thumb down per day/week/etc. I have only 21 thumb up and 2 thumb down and I've never given any one a reason for thumbs down, I'm a very laid back gamer, I move quickly, and have had no internet issues. It seems like the thumbs down are coming from Dominion players which is a new game for me, it makes me not want to play that game anymore which is said because I'm just learning it and I generally like it. It's very frustrating to have your public image smeared when you are a newcomer to this sight just because people don't like losing. I hope they somehow recognize this issue and do something. New players will be frustrated (and this one is) if they get an unearned reputation. Thanks.

Agree~!

Maybe it should show the player's "thumb down number/thumb downs %" and we can block him before the game start...!
