Will we ever be able to take back mistaken moves?

Post by cyberian11 »

That's the one complaint I have with this site, and it's a big one.

That's why I play more games at Yucata than I do here.
This is a very unforgiving website.

It should be simple - ask for a confirmation after we make a move.
Should be easy enough to program

Very frustrating

Ooooor...

You could just be sure that you've made the right decision BEFORE you click... Problem solved

This has been the most requested feature for this website for a long time now, and it is not easy to code. It is definitely not easy to code. There was a bug that made undoing conflict with replays in through the ages and I'm not even sure if that was fixed yet or not. We can only hope that future games have undo implemented. But for old games? Most of the developers have already left the website/gone inactive/who knows what they are up to now.

IMHO, for the interface to enforce undoing (just in yucata), it would likely probably require big changes and overhauls. If the studio system goes into too radical a change, existing developers would have to relearn the new interface. If that design consideration is even considered, I can't see that happening any time soon.

I am strongly against a general confirmation screen for all turns of all games. We do need and already have undo for some complex games (e.g. Tzolkin) when it really makes sense because a single stupid move or misclick can kill the whole game and a match takes a lot of time. Maybe there are other complex games that need an undo, and we should hope that it gets implemented when it makes sense.

BUT I think that for many games, the need to double-confirm every move would kill the flow and pace of the game. I love how fast I can play 7Wonders and Sushi Go!. Just imagine you would need to extra-confirm every card, match times would be probably longer than 10 minutes. Do misclicks happen? Yes! Do I really care? No. I can just play another match in a few minutes.

Hi,

First, we need to be clear about what we are talking about. There are two very different things : confirming a move (it has not been processed yet) and undoing a move (it has been processed, and the result is visible). Of course we can't undo moves that have revealed hidden informations, that would be cheating. (Well some players ask for this possibility in training mode, if all players at the table agree, but I won't talk about that here.)

Undoing a move can be (very) difficult, but asking a confirmation is not so hard. Since you don't see the result of the move, it may not be enough to avoid all mistakes, but it can avoid some, especially on touch devices.

I think that nobody wants this feature to be mandatory for all players, especially for sushi go, I don't think that's the kind of game cyberian11 had in mind. It could of course be optional, and a lot of people don't really care if other players' moves take 1 or 2 more seconds, especially for complex games.
I think that the argument "don't let players confirm their moves because it will slow down game pace" is not a good argument.
First, because for some games some players will be scared to misclick, and they will take their time to be sure everything's ok, to avoid ruining their game. Not having a "confirm move" does not necessarily make games run faster.
Second, even if for most players it does slow down the game, I think it's not a good reason to want this to never exist on BGA. It can always happen that a player is slow for other reasons, and if they play within their time, it should be ok.

To me, the only logical solution if you want your games to be fast, is to ask for a "very fast" time setting, in addition to fast, normal and slow. This has been asked several times in the forum, and I don't see why it would be a problem to add this. There are two suggestions about this:
#15651: "Super Fast time limit"
#17067: "Can't stop too long even at fast setting"
(the second one mentions can't stop in the title, but in the suggestion there is "some gams should have an extra fast settings", so it can be useful to vote for it and add a comment to not limit it to can't stop)

I don't understand Sushi Go being used an an example in this thread. You already do have to click a confirm button after selecting a card. (and as a piece of anecdata, I don't like it, because quite often I choose a card and wait for a couple of minutes for the other players to take their turns, before I realise that they're all waiting for me after all as I forgot to click the confirm button).

I admit that Sushi Go! is a superbad example (you're right, it is not even an example). I haven't thought about that it actually has a confirmation button. A much better example would be Can't Stop, here I think that confirming every move would be much more annoying than helpful (although extra-confirmation can make sense for the stop button). And yes, I know, Can't Stop is probably not what the thread-opener had in mind.

Thanks fafa_fr for clearing things up and pointing out interesting thoughts and the idea that having no confirmation could actually slow a game down. The "very fast" mode is a good idea and thanks for the links. However, for me it is not so much about playing fast in general, but I really don't like to make unnecessary clicks all the time. It is more about the "flow" of the game that can suffer from unnessary prompts and I think confirmation screens should be implemented with caution. I played on Yucata a few times and often the extra confirmation was more annoying than helpful to me. Of course this is a subjective thing and having it optional could help the most players.
