Arena mode: Why GT-5?

Post by Serilo »

I`d like to know why GT-5 is the arena standard instead of GT-6.
GT-6 is far more interesting and difficult:
It forces more difficult and risky decisions
-To prevent being blocked you need to be in the 5th gear(or next to a corner/in a corner) or higher; instead of GT-5 where you need a measly 3 and you can accelerate much faster
-With the 6th gear present the number of dangerous Loss of Controls with damage effects increases, without the damage chart isnt even complete!
In arena matches with experienced players damage Loss of Controls are extremely rare(due to GT-5)
-Going from 6th gear to the 1st isnt actually possible which increases the chance that other cars can come back; in GT-5 you can do 1-2-W-W-3-4-5 1RRR-2-3-4-5, in GT6maximum speed means either minimum one less dice or no max speed.
5-4-3-2-1-W-W is a common flatout strategy for cars more than 14 areas away, followed by 1-2-W-W-3-4-5 which means that usually there is no chance to fight back unless 543 is all ! . With 6-5-4-3-2-1 the danger is much higher.
- A perfect run is much less likely(one more of the dangerous dice)
Without the Acceleration dice mobility decreases(this is a good thing) when going down gears.

I am by no means an expert but I play this game a lot in arena.
To me your message explains to me why gt-5 is better then gt-6 in arena.

You explain that you have to take more risks in gt-6 and becuse of that more LOC occur and more damag tokens are handed out.

So this means gt-6 is more dependant on good dice throws and luck that you recieve a green flag token and not a damage token.

So to me this says that gt-5 is more about skill then gt-6.

In my opinion you want to reward skil in the arena mode and not luck.

No, that`s false. In GT-5 , if people know what they are doing, Loss of Control with a speed of 3+ rarely happens(about 1-2 times per race). However, IF it happens by chance(e.g. 54321WW with three warnings on 543) then you are likely out of the race(and even if not very unlikely to be 1st). That rewards luck even more. Higher chances of LOC and the 6-1 impossibility allow greater chances of comebacks at GT-6 than GT-5, if well executed. The person with the best risk management/track play(corners, where to stop/ overtake awareness) has a higher chance to win.
Furthermore, the lack of tokens essentially removes part of the gameplay in GT-5 for most of the time(weather, yellow flags, pit stops...).

Agreed, GT-6 requires more skill and should be the standard.

personaly i found the GT5 more tactical and more control over what you want to do.

At first, I would have liked 2 laps race... but on long track, one lap seems to be good enough

Watch a replay of top players competing (bloodies is a very good tactical player to watch and currently ranked 1 this season) and you will see that they never play 54321ww and if by some extreme circumstances they will play a roll like this they will never play it flat out so they will not loose control in 3rd gear and spin out to 00, spinning out to 0 Is no problem (rather not offcourse).

Yeah 54321WW was a kinda bad example, still, you just reinforce my point(although in some situations spinning out to 0 is a big problem):
A large part of the game(pit stops, damage tokens) is simply not happening or happening very very rarely in GT-5 3-players; which means that GT-5 3-players is de facto not playing the full game, which means 3-players GT-5 should not be the arena setup.

I've only played GT-5 and when I was learning the game getting my ELO up I got a GT-6 game in. I didn't know the game well enough to know what I was doing and just got killed, but I think a compromise could be making arena random between GT5 and GT6.

Will be the same with GT6...
for some race, having a LOC0 and you are out of the first position.
So no arena mode is not to experiment the full game...

GT5 is the more tactical car because of the boost dice.

Personnaly, I think 4 drivers / race would have been better

The boost dice SEEM to make it more tactical. In reality they make it easier to avoid difficult situations and nearly completely eliminate part of the gameplay. GT-6 is the most difficult to play, and offers the complete gameplay.
AND NO, ARENA IS FOR THE FULL GAMEPLAY, not for some easy variant.
