BGA Arena, other comments, and suggestions
BGA Arena interface
*** 1. It is very tedious trying to get a game in arena. You want better matchmaking? This is totally ignored because games start as soon as the required number is reached. Can’t even get a game in many of my favourites, including Niagara and Taluva, so getting a fair ranking in these is impossible and getting to the next level is nearly impossible. Please show the number of players ready to play each Favourite game, not just games I have have registered for. I have to keep starting/stopping to find out which games people want to play at the time. Limit of 3 arena games is ridiculous as I just want to play any of my games. (Don’t say “Join premium” because that just isn’t happening.) You want more game matches? Then take away this 3 game limit.
I would like to be able to see all available favourite games from one control screen. That is, all my Favourites in Arena AND Simple AND Tournament.
Opponent information
*** 2. Please bring back the view which shows information about prospective opponents, especially how many games they have won out of how many they have played. This may be available on a desktop computer through a mouseover function, but not on a tablet.
Arena matchmaking
*** 3. If you want to do matchmaking, allow players to choose to only play players at their own level or +/- 1 level.
Arena rankings skewed
*** 4. Players who get in early in the arena season quickly get promoted to the Elite level, while players who start later have to grind their way through many lower levels first. Fix this so it is fair for all. Strong/expert players who start late eat away others’ hard earned level points quickly because they are supposedly weaker, for example they are Bronze playing a Gold level player. Take into account the hard work done to reach a level and don’t move players back, only up. The late starter should move up fast to their appropriate level, but not at the expense of players who have already attained their position. Overall ranking should also be taken into account here.
Correcting BGA’s Elo ranking farce - a tweak to a better way to rank players
*** 5. A word on Elo. Your Elo implementation alters players positions too quickly. A player earns a particular position, then has several good or bad games in a row and their position changes dramatically. This is an incorrect way of assigning players’ relative strengths. Everyone has runs of good and bad games. Partly this is due to the random elements in some of the games (BGA’s supposed randomness in Yahtzee is ridiculous). Partly this is due to the whim of other players who choose an option that favours one opponent over another. For example you win 20 games in a row, then lose 5 games in a row and you drop back to where you started, despite having a very impressive win/loss ratio. A weighted system would be fairer. Older games would count less towards your ranking than recent games. BUT THEY STILL COUNT!! For each time period (week/month/quarter/year) reduce the weight for older results by 10 or 20 per cent. This allows BGA to have weekly and monthly rankings as well as overall rankings.
Poloice Kingmaking, especially in Arena
*** 6. A word about KINGMAKING. You haven’t been policing it. Reported occurrences have been ignored by BGA. Arena is meant to be a competition zone. Surely you have to police it there! Hearts and Oh Hell are full of players who don’t try for the win; they just want to steal Elo from higher ranked players so games often become farcical. Police the Arena properly or you have no right to claim it as a “competition zone”.
Red thumbs and Arena mode
*** 7. Red thumbs should still carry through to Arena. At the very least, players you don’t want to play with should not be able to write messages to you in Chat. They should be blocked.
Spectators and Chat - players should have control
*** 8. Spectators should only be allowed with the agreement of ALL players. They should not be allowed to use the players’ Chat facility. In some games, spectators have been distracting or even abusive and the players have no way to remove them. A simple checkbox Allow spectators would solve this. A separate checkbox would apply to each individual and there should be one for “All spectators”. The checkbox is temporary for that game only. Players could have their default spectator preferences preloaded for each game. Red thumbed spectators would be denied access. Also, players should have the ability to disable comments from players who become abusive/intimidating/annoying/distracting during the game. A simple message to the effect that “Your comments have been blocked by Xyz Player - They have not received your message” would suffice.
Question about balancing life and BGA
*** 9. How can we avoid penalising people who have real life interruptions to their games? For example, phone calls, visitors, interruptions by nearby people, toilet, medical emergencies, bad internet connection, BGA server unresponsive within the time limits of the game, just falling asleep during a game, to name a few that have happened quite a lot to people in games I have been in. I suggest that other players still get an advantage, but that the player concerned can submit a claim to have their penalties reversed. Limits should apply. For example, only one “Fell asleep” within 8 hours of another “Fell asleep”, since once you wake up you should go to bed, not keep playing! Phone call/doorbell/local interruption should have time added, say 5 minutes. Medical emergency should not have to notify others, just go! Claim penalty reversal later. Bad internet connections should not be penalised. BGA should be able to determine speed of connection and run a player’s clock down based on the player’s thinking time, not including transmission time.
Thank you for considering these comments and suggestions. I applaud you for trying to improve BGA for board gamers.
Cheers,
