Time limit / game clock explanation needed

Post by TOROC »

Hi guys,

I have read the F.A.Q. on game clock https://boardgamearena.com/faq?anchor=faq_playing_clock.
Yet, I'm still confused big time ;)
Can someone please explain what is initial time, additional time and maximum amount of time?
E.g.
4 moves per day: +6h00 per turn (maximum 24h00) is in a game displayed as just 24 hours for a move.
If every player has 24 hours, how can we in total make 4 moves per day? It's more like 1 move per day which gives 4 moves in 4 days.
And what about the +6h00 per turn? Is a turn the same as a move?

To add to the confusion...
8 moves per day: +1h30 per turn (maximum 12h00)
Following the equation from the F.A.Q.: 'X turns / day' means '24 / X' hours of additional time per move
So, in this case 24 / 8 = 3 hours of additional time per move. Where the +1h30 per turn comes from?

I would really appreciate if you make it straight for me :D

The the 4 move per day example, 24 hours is your start time and maximum time. Then each time you take a turn (a move) you get 6 hours added back (up to the 24 max)

For speeds greater than 4 moves per day play times are used (there are 12 hours when the clock won’t run). This is why the values for max time and time per move are half what you would think. This is necessary to have all players in a game this speed to be in similar time zones.

Initial time is what the clock starts at when the table is created. It allows the players to look at the initial conditions and be sociable and greet each other.

Additional time is how much the clock increases after each move. If you make moves at the moves/day listed, you will never run out of time.

Maximum time is the largest amount the clock will ever reach. You can't make 10 very fast moves in a 2move/day game and then take 5 days off. 2moves/day is the slowest you are allowed to play.

My question is...is it 4 moves/day in total between all the players, so everyone has to play 1 time each (4 player game) or 4 moves/day/player so 16 moves in total?

Thank you!

A minimum of 4 turns needs to happen every day, to keep your clock positive, you personally need to go within 6 hours of the player before you.

I was considering playing a longer game (4-6 hours) but I am concerned that there is no opportunity for a personal need break and if you need one, you might be kicked out of game even if you warn the other players that you need a 5 minute break for personal reasons. The obvious solution is to only play long games on turn based method so that you can schedule your personal needs around the playing of the game.
