About BGA + Asmodee

Post by sourisdudesert »

Dear BGA Studio developers,

Following this announcement, we'd like to write to you specifically.

All along the years, you have contributed to help us build an extraordinary service, allowing thousands of players from the whole world to play hundreds of different games on BGA. Our main mission at BGA is to make sure that all your efforts won't be lost, and that this service can continue to run in the next years and for a very long time in the future. We all know that the major weakness of BGA was that it was relying on a very small group of key people. This is not the case anymore, and whatever happens in the future you can know for sure that BGA will be there :)

That being said, as you know, BGA works thanks to a unique combination of commercial and non-commercial domains. On one hand, we need best selling games, Premium games, that bring the money needed to run BGA (and to propose you freelance missions). On the other hand, we want to give a chance to all board games to meet their audience on BGA, even if the vast majority of them are "non-profitable commercially speaking", and for this we want to keep BGA open to a community of passionate volunteer developers. Thanks to you, this has been working for 11 years now, and we want to make it continue working in the future.

So in this announcement, the most important thing is that we stay the same: same team, same spirit, same model. We don't want to become a "Premium/Best sellers only" service, and at the same time we consider that all board games must have a chance to be on BGA even if "non commercially profitable". To do that, like we did in the past, we will need game developers for freelance missions for some specific games, and we will need volunteers for the vast majority of the other games. We know that some of you prefer to work as volunteers to work on their preferred licence, at their own pace, making their own choices, while some of you are more interested by paid missions even if they have more constraints. We used to propose both at BGA, and again: this won't change.

Now, speaking about games: in the following weeks, we are going to start an important number of missions, both for new Asmodee game licences and for other licences. Those of you who have previously expressed interest in freelance missions have already received some info about this from Jurica. Please do not hesitate to write to studio(at)boardgamearena.com if you are interested: we have missions for you :)

Take care!

This agreement seems like good news for the future of BGA !

One question though : what will be the future of projects already in developement by volunteers for games belonging to the Asmodee Group ? It would make sense for Asmodee to want fast deliveries for their own games, which is hardly compatible with volunteer work. :)

Not sure which games fall in this category exactly, but I can count at least 4 :
  • Formula D (Asmodee)
  • Ginkgopolis (Pearl Games)
  • Troyes Dice (Pearl Games)
  • Myrmes (Ystari)

I'm pleased for the founders of BGA. They've put in a ton of good work on this site, and I'm happy so see them getting rewarded.

As a volunteer developer, though, I have mixed feelings. I love BGA and was happy to contribute my time and effort to support an independent site by and for gamers. Now that BGA is owned by venture capital, though, I feel less like I'm contributing to a community and more like I'm being taken advantage of. I'm not sure what the best solution would be.

Does anyone else feel similarly, or have any ideas of how best to maintain the volunteer development model going forward?

For pointing out this inequity, they removed my game Stir Fry Eighteen from the platform.

I absolutely agree. A good analogy I saw on BGG was volunteering to clean a neighborhood park only to find out that the park was bought by Disney.

Asmodee can afford to pay developers.

Hi

I have developed Dice Forge, Builders antiquity (premium) and mainteaned part of builders Middle Age.
I did mainly for fun and challenge. The premium game that I implemented was for free also.

I agree that it can change your perception about all future work, however I do not think you should look back with sadness. You did develop a game for some reasons and I am sure they are still valid. This association may impact your decisions on future games but that's all. Knowing the team, I am sure that you can still implement a game if you wish, maybe the best sellers will be more looked on.

As an example, for Dice Forge, it took me a loooot of time, the publisher was ok with it and they like (love?) our implementation. I pretty sure Asmodée will be ok also. After all, to implement a Repo game, you will talk with Repo production and not with Asmodée! Asmodée owns them ok, but that does change that they cannot track each individual action of all their companies...

At least, I will continue working on BGA because it will still be fun, still a challenge for me and because I love being able to put games that I wish to play on this platform.

Cheers!

I share Eliott's feelings, and with great regret, I will be reluctant to contribute new content to the site. I'm not interested in commissioned work either.

But indeed, that's from now on; I wouldn't want any of the existing content (neither mine nor others') to be removed for any reason related to the buy up.

It would not change anything for me personally. The fact that somebody else own BGA does not make it less fun to develop games.
And if does for you feel free to go develop for other site, there are many open source opportunities everywhere!
Lets just keep this positive and be happy for Greg and Emmanuel, they really deserve this!

Not for "non-economically" viable games, just as BGA was not paying for developpers for these games.
On the other side, BGA started having freelance projects for major releases for more than a year now, and so will Asmodee in the future.
