Ze Monstah wrote: 04 March 2021, 18:28 For me, no game is good for everyone (from the winning logic; unless it is a cooperative game like Hanabi), so i prefer to say "good day" instead, meaning "i wish you a good day, despite how good or bad the game was to you".
What if you opponent has had a bad day? Are you going to impose upon them that the day is a good one?

Everything can be twisted to appear callous, it doesn't mean that it is.
I explained pretty clearly i think. IF i say "good day", it is how I wish the player's/players' day to be from that moment on, it has nothing to do with how the day has been up to the point of the game finish.
While that copy-paste "ggggggg" is in direct referrence to the game which has just happened.

But you gave me an idea: After winning a game in 2/3/4..., I could simply write "I wish you all a better day from now on", 'cause better seems more ok than good.

But this is not a big deal, just a social issue. There will always be people who will be annoyed with this (less people), and will always be people who will always throw a gg, at the end of EVERY GAME, to show their goodness (or whatever).

I forgot to mention in my first reply, that i also prefer "Congratulations", "Thanks for playing", etc. which are a bit different than... gg... And are also less shallow.

And I saw some people make comparisons with the end of a... Tennis match, let's say. The comparison is not concise, since i kind of know for a fact most of the game-ends, at the net, are followed by "congrats, you played well, etc.", or "good luck for the rest of the tournament", etc., and not by an exact "gg" or "good game" :))
Or I guess you can even say "gg"... depends.

But imagine Pablo Carreño Busta saying "Gg" to Novak Đoković, at the US Open last year, when they parted ways at the end of the match, after Novak was disqualified from the competition for hitting that line judge lady with the ball in the neck. :)))

I don’t get why I‘d have to appreciate it just because someone is too lazy to type „thanks for the game“ instead of „gg“.

And it‘s not about walking away without saying anything, but how „gg“ specifically can be inappropriate depending on the circumstances, and that something else would work better.
I’ve gone back and forth on “gg“, but if we are willing to normalize “good game” to an acronym, I wonder why we can’t all start typing “tftg”. Hmm. I might try that.

Then people would just interpret it as being thanked for playing poorly or being unlucky.

I agree with some others here in that gg is just a way of being polite, not necessarily kind. I don't see anything wrong with that. Would it be more personal in full sentences instead of the abbreviation? Maybe yes, but we live in an age of abbreviations nowadays, if we like it or not. To be clear, I am one of those old fashioned guys who prefers full sentences too most of the times.

I just hope everyone can also have had a good game, even if they lost. It's all about playing the game no?

Yes, this is really all semantics and is more on how individual people interpret things. Maybe I'm a slow poke with typing but I do not have time to type "That was fun, thanks for the game!" to someone before they move on to the next table. Some people can be bitter and take winning too seriously, so they will find offence in anything you say (that wasnt fun, why are you thanking me and rubbing it in my face that I lost, etc.). These people probably need to work on their personal mindsight and how they react to situations, rather than trying to get other people to change.

Whereas in-person, you have that ability to give a more personalized response, unless they run away super fast after losing (lmao). "gg" is universally accepted, concise, and appropriate for the virtual world. I am also highly amused that people are having this argument ahahahaha. I think the pandemic might be getting to some of us :D

I think a solution is for BGA to enable a "disable chat" feature. That way if you do get insulted by a "gg," you can turn the chat off. I know that chat can also be distracting in some games, so this seems like a good solution (if OP was looking for a solution).

I would find that really rude. Which just goes to show that people take things in different ways. Which also just goes to show this is a stupid argument.

I'd find it rude cause it sounds, first, like you're assuming that my day needs to be better, or that it's bad cause I just lost to you. (I noticed a lot of assumptions in both your posts.) And second, if you're the one that won, it sounds a bit arrogant as well. So don't assume your way is a better one just cause it's your way.

As for this silly argument, it's odd to see people complaining about an abbreviation cause they're apparently too lazy to write something out, when in the world today abbreviating everything is what people do. I actually do find that annoying, but it's annoying regardless of context so I have to just shrug it off, and I use some abbreviations myself. I don't see the "gg" thing as being any different than tbh or imo, and probably far better than stuff like ppl.

The site sort of pushes this politeness, so why put this on individual people? They've basically been told by the site that this is good behavior and a way to earn green thumbs.

I personally will write "gg congrats" to the winner (which is more me saying you played a good game), and just "gg all, that was close" if that's the case. If I totally stomped someone I don't do that cause it does seem a little tacky, but maybe just a "thanks for the game/thanks for playing" which means exactly what it says and not whatever some paranoid person wants to twist it around to mean.

As I said already, "Congratulations", "Good day" or "Goodbye" is what I write, when I do.

"Better day" was just an idea in the context brought by n_faker. I never wrote that. And it was meant like "better day than what you had until now, even if the day was already good", not having to do with the game just finished, and regardless of the winner.

I think you could be more careful with your words, because "st***d sil*y debate" or "par*noid person", in my opinion, sound a lot more aggressive, insulting and targetting, than my general "lazy" (in the context of the general opinion of the people who excessively abbreviate), or the "muscle soreness" shade.

Goodbye.

This distills this issue to its core. The basic argument is "this makes me feel bad because it wasn't a good game for me so I want to stop everyone from expressing a common sentiment at the end of a game and I don't really care if you thought it was a good game or had a good time because the world revolves around my feelings."

It's just a nicety. Probably not worth reading more into it than that.

I don't think I said that I want anyone to change or whatever; I don't understand why you came to that conclusion.
I only debated, because i saw the OP's thread.
I even said we are different people so it is ok to accept diversity ("no solution, 'cause we are different people"), but I expressed my reasons to why i think saying a robotic "gg" in all circumstances, is not really ok, and I take actions into my hands, without asking anyone to change (if i don't like someone saying GG after a game is ruined 'cause someone got out of time and expelled, I can red thumb that person, and no harm done; as well as anyone can do that with me or anyone else).

But again, I debated (with a lot of examples and instances...) without insulting the other side, or asking anyone to change (reading the arguments presented by you above, it is not the same situation, 'cause in your reference, it says the ones who are annoyed by GG and etc., need to change).
