SECRET MOON

Post by Zanzaro »

Segnalo traduzione sbagliata del titolo.
Tradurre Secret Moon con «Il segreto della Luna» è errato:
Sarebbe corretto se il titolo fosse Moon's Secret (cosa che non è).
Penso che sia più corretto tradurre con «Luna Segreta».
Grazie per l'attenzione.

If a game does not have a localised version, the game title should just be in English.

This is the case for Secret Moon: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/162 ... n/versions

Indeed. I have reverted it to the original title.

Hello everyone, I link to this post. :)

I am part of a large group here on BGA (more than 1600 people) and we have recently discovered Secret Moon and we are playing it often.

When we started many translations were wrong (probably done by an automatic translator) but I should have fixed almost all of them.

The problem is that I can't reach some pieces to translate and more precisely the words present in the "accusation panel", that is, the panel that appears when a player has to accuse another player of being a certain character.

I am also attaching the photo:

Is there a way to translate those words too?

Many thanks in advance, by ALA----IN :)

That was a bug actually, translation was not applied on these labels. It should be fixed now.
Have fun!

For future reference, you can report bugs like these using a table number from the game: https://boardgamearena.com/bugs?game=1085

I don't speak Italian, but I have done a significant amount of translation for the site. Glancing at your translations, some actually go against the translation guidelines, which state that the meaning, style and punctuation of the original text needs to be kept intact as much as possible. Adding your own explanations or creative "flavour" is not the goal.

For example: "Done" should be translated to the equivalent of "Done" (as appeared to be the case in the previous translation: "Fatto"), not to "OK, let's start playing!". This is probably a button, so this will look strange now. "You got me, I'm out" is also not the same as "You guessed! I'm revealed and captured, so I'm out of this round.".

You seem to be incorrectly putting spaces before pretty much every punctuation mark as well (even as the only change from a previous translation), which is mostly a French thing.

I would advise you to read the Translation guidelines and revisit your translations.

Thank you KongKing123 for looking into this.
I would like to strongly emphasize your point. Translation is NOT reinterpretation and should aim to the same level of verbosity (in general and especially indeed for buttons!). @ALA----IN, please get back go a translation that is as close as possible to the original English text.

I'm not sure why you've switched to Italian, but I guess I'll rely on Google Translate to answer.
ALA----IN (Google Translate) wrote: 01 April 2021, 09:19 Hi, yes, I confirm that I had read the guidelines and tried to be faithful to the original game. :)
I just tried to be a little clearer about some "generic" concepts that I noticed created confusion during the games, especially in the case of beginners and apprentices, but trying to stay faithful to the original text.
Again: (subjectively) increasing clarity may be well-intentioned, but should not be done. The developer wants people to see a given text (with a certain content and, if possible, length) across all languages. If I translate "You are the Priestess" to the Dutch equivalent of "You are the Priestess, secretly conspiring with the Princess. Tip: a good first action is to accuse someone of being a Guard!", that adds helpful information for Dutch-speaking players, but it is clearly not the desired result. If the developer had wanted that information to be directly available, he would have included it in the original text. It is much longer too, so it could look bad.

More often than not, I've also found people adding "explanations" that are actually incorrect or even more confusing than the original, in effect disadvantaging their language, with nothing the developer can do about it. If you think the original text can be made more clear by meaningfully changing its content, you should file a suggestion report (for example: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=27542). That way, the developer can judge if it has merit, and all players can benefit. Small corrections to the text can be submitted through the translation system itself (English to English).
ALA----IN (Google Translate) wrote: 01 April 2021, 09:19 The spaces are mainly to make the question / exclamation mark more evident and therefore do not affect the meaning of the sentence
It doesn't matter that it doesn't affect the meaning when it's grammatically incorrect. There are rules for spacing around punctuation and they should be followed here as well (as far as I can see, Italian and Dutch don't seem to differ much in this regard).

An exaggerated comparison, but some people might think starting every word with a capital letter and using three spaces instead of just one would make things more clear as well, but that is no reason to do it.
ALA----IN (Google Translate) wrote: 01 April 2021, 09:19"fatto", in Italian it does not convey the idea of "being ready to play" and therefore I have wanted to clarify it (it is a button not part of the game, that is, it is like a "start").
"Done" doesn't convey "Ready to play" in English either. The game asks you to do something, and you indicate that you've done it. Just "Ready" could be an alternative, but the added fluff is not necessary and makes the button unintentionally big. You also can't be sure the string "Done" is never used in any other context, or will never be used elsewhere in the future. For example, the button could also appear to confirm an action. Having to click "Ready to play" when you've actually just finished playing would be rather silly.

It is of course acceptable (and recommended) for a text to have a bit of a different structure if this works better in the target language, but the content should essentially be the same.
