Question about surrender

Post by YeolmuKimchi »

Hi,
is there a difference if I surrender before lose?
A few days ago I surrendered then the opponent told me not to do that. I guess the winner would get smaller point if he wins by surrender.
Thanks in advance !

ELO 변동의 차이는 없습니다. 그냥 기권이 마음에 안들어서 그런듯

It depends what you mean with "surrender".

You can concede (only in 2-player games), and that has no ELO or karma difference compared with finishing the game and losing. That is generally fine with everyone, and the only reason for the opponent to complain is if they want to beat their own personal highest score or something.

The other thing is quitting a game in progress. Whether it's 2 player or more, that's a really bad thing. It has bad consequences for you: you lose ELO, you lose karma and may be punished if you do it a lot. It has bad consequences for the opponents: they don't get the full ELO they'd get if they won regularly, and in a multiplayer game they will all be tied, and not be able to beat each other.

I do find it a bit disturbing when they concede in the last turn. like 30sec before game would be finished. They didn't have the time for those few seconds to let the game play out and count the score? I think that's bad style. If you want to concede to save everyone some time - then do it earlier, not when it's basically finished anyway. But that's how I perceive it - maybe others don't care, idk.
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

This player has quit only 2 games yet but conceded a lot, so I consider 'surrender' in this topic as 'resignation'.

Well, I don't specifically. Maybe there were chances before the last turn, they missed the eventual defeat, or were just pissed?

It does depend on the game. In most games, you're expected to let the game play out, but in Tash-Kalar, you're supposed to concede if your opponent triggers the end of the game and you can't at least tie the score with your last move. (It's not bad form to play that turn anyway, but the rules say you are not expected to.)

Through the Ages prompts me to concede the game at the beginning of every turn ... which seems excessive, but apparently it was the easiest way to code the concede mechanism into the interface. (It has to use its own concede mechanism, not the BGA mechanism, because there are rules for handling what happens when a player leaves the game.)

So I'll wave the white flag in Tash-Kalar, but not in most other games.

I meant it, concession. Thank you.

Yes, you are right. I guess it depends on each style. Playing until the end is a polite way for sure but , nowadays in many online-game we "GG" when we see the opponent definitely will win. Time never come back :D if you know you know
