Best-of-Three mode in tournaments

Post by Robo65 »

Hello,

in games where luck plays a part (e.g. Carcassonne), it is better to play tournament games as "best-of-three". The players play 2 or 3 games, and to win the pairing, one must win more games that the opponent.

In best-of-three, the player should get one victory point for not losing - meaning: one game results in 1:0, 1:1 or 0:1. Game results are added. If the sum is 2:0 or 0:2 after two games, the winner is certain and no third game is needed. Otherwise, they play a third game. That may result in a total of 2:2 or even 3:3. In swiss system or full leagues, such a result isn't a problem. For K.O. tournaments, we need some more thoughts about a tie breaker. Perhaps by adding game points, or another game.

Tie example: Player A vs Player B, playing Carcassonne. Game 1 results in 50:79, Game 2 in 91:90. The score is now 1:1 and 141:169 and 3 third game must be played. This results in 59:59, giving a total score of 2:2 and 200:228. For breaking the tie, the system could demand a 4th game, or it could decide for player B because they got more Carcassonne points.

Of course, in best-of-three mode, tournaments need more time. But that's not always bad :)

Or you play the 3 (or 5 or 7) games concurrently. Probably best for KO system. But just playing multiple tournaments also works. Luck is part of most games so you can’t win every tournament. But if you wanted to have a big more meaningful world championship in a KO system playing best of series would be nice.

me totally agreeing!
many good players seek for such an option in tournaments to make their outcome less random.
