Prestige: Expert about luck gestion

Post by Babz »

Hi

I think that being a good player , Expert or Master in games where luck is very present like Backgammon or Can't Stop is far more difficult than being one of those in games where luck is not so determinant.

Allmost every one playing enough games like Hive or Caylus (games that I know) will become a good player or more, it is not the case fore luck games.

It can be easily seen with numbers of people at those stage. No masters in backgammon, very few expert, few good players. In Caylus dozens of masters, many experts, lot of good players.

So I think as far as prestige points are concerned that would be more fair that rankings (master expert GP) wouldn't be rewarded the same. GP at Caylus or so games, 100. Gp at Luck games, 200 for example. To me it is as impressive to be expert at backgammon as being a master at Hive (even more).

The problem with the Backgmmon on BGA is that there is no possibility to play a 5 points-game (or more), and no videau.
If it would be possible, it is NOT lucky to win, it's just better strategy & tactics.

We must have to wait until backgammon become the real backgammon ;)

I posted just that yesterday.

I fully agree to that but my point is still valid for some games like elfenland or cant Stop

Just because dice are involved doesn't mean that it is totally luck-based. I would agree that in games where dice determine your only course of action it is, but that is not the case for most of the games on BGA. Can't Stop does involve decision-making, so while there is an element of luck, it does not determine who the good players are.

I would argue that what should really change is either the cutoffs for good/expert/master levels or the Elo formula for such games. The Elo formula represents probability of winning based on difference in ratings. It seems to be the same for all games on this site. If the desire is to keep the Good/Expert/Master levels the same, then the formula should change to reflect that. For example in Caylus a 60% chance of the favorite winning might be 100 points, while in Can't Stop a 60% favorite might be 200 points. The Elo system can really pick any delta they want to describe a 60% chance of winning.

An additional thing that can be done is changing the weight of individual games...the higher the luck, the lower the weight. This would prevent the wild ratings swings that can be seen in higher luck games (I dropped about 250 points in Can't Stop in 15 minutes).

And backgammon...adding the doubling cube and gammon/backgammons with games to 5 or 7 would be great.

I didn't say it is only luck. It is in the topics name it is about luck gestion and assesing the odds. But it doesn't change the fact that between 2 players of the same level, luck is what makes the winner. And as i said, Cant stop sees no master at all and only 8 experts, caylus on the other hand as 6 masters (even more) and 30 experts. IMHO this shows something. If u look at Good players Cant stop around 420 and only 90 at caylus. Means it is hard to be more than GP at" luck" games , and probably harder to be a GP at"strategy" games.

Achieve to be expert in Can't stop in my opinion is as prestigious as being a Master in caylus because at least as difficult to achieve.
