Question about Premium release game and Revenue Share

Post by Dr Strangegame »

Hello,

I wanted to get clarification on when releasing a premium game to Beta. I worked on a game that is in Alpha, and the publisher of the game wants it to be released as a premium game with revenue share. BGA already is ready to release it to Beta, but the Publisher is asking me what is a "common" percentage for myself (as the coder and maintainer of the game) to receive in the revenue share.
Since this is my first time working on a revenue share game, I am not sure. What is a common percentage to receive as the game programmer?
Also, how exactly does this work? Is it the responsibility of the publisher to send me a percentage of what they receive each month?
Or does BGA automatically take an agreed percentage and send that to me each month? Also, is this a check that BGA sends to me each month?
Thank you for any clarification, just trying to get all the facts here.

I'm definitely not an expert on this, but from what I understand, this is completely between you and the publisher. BGA will send all revenue to the publisher and its up to them to send (or not) something to you. This might be monthly, yearly, or whatever you and they agree to. Also, from what I understand, since BGA is not involved, there is no recourse if they decide to cut you out.

As for a standard percentage, again, no idea, but I saw a post on the discord recently that mentioned 1/3.

You should have clarified that part with bga and the publisher prior to start developping the game. Shared revenue for the developper is a fallback option only if neither the publisher nor bga wants to pay for the developpment of the game. Usual share is 33% for each during 1 year then nothing for the dev and 50/50 for bga/publisher.

Understood, and no worries. Again, I'm just trying to get clarity on this. I have a better understanding now for future projects.

Any other insight on the process of being a hired developer? I've 17 years of experience in web development so looking to make the shift over to bga with my current unemployment I'd much rather start being my own boss.

What kind of insights are you looking for ? Maybe you could join the discord server for devs rather than discussing here
