I'm not saying the northern shoveler is a great card. It's one of the worst cards that gives you extra card draw. But it does give you extra card draw, which is the single most important thing at the start of the game. The more cards you draw, the more likely you are to find good ones.

There's already a 20 second grace period after you run out of time, before you can be kicked out. If you have connection problems or need a lot of thinking time, then just stick to slower time controls. Don't sign up for fast games if you're not going to play fast.

It's just the internet equivalent of shaking hands with your opponents after a game. It's good sportsmanship.
