I pretty much only play them for the animal symbols when there are respective conservation projects. It's nice to also grab some appeal while you're at it, I think the most I ever got was 4.

It seems like on income turn 1, you are given the option to use the Islanders ability BEFORE you draw your territory tiles, making you skip one use of your ability. At least that's what happened to me during my last Islanders game.

I would guess that Nomads are low because at the end of the day, you're foregoing a bazillion points in completed rows, which should ideally net you about... idk, 60 points? throughout the game.
