Well there is nothing you can do to restrict the ELO of your opponents in arena. That’s a core principle behind it.

However, there are ways to play with people from the same league as you. You have to use the old lobby. Then, before starting a search for an arena table, you can change the search settings with the cog wheel icon. One of the advanced options will let you restrict if you want to play with players from leagues away from yours. You’ll wait longer, sure, but if that’s not an issue for you, it’s a better experience.
I tried this a while back, but it doesn't seem to work?
i think so too. that this does not work. especialy because i cant see how i can start an arena game from that screen.

edit: im obviously too bad to compete with the top 100 ark nova players. but since arena has no matchmaking at all, i keep playing them. and i keep losing to them.
this is so frustrating, that i guess i just played my last arena game, and will go back to normal games... at least there i can win.
i NEVER heared of any ranking system at all, which uses absolutly no matchmaking btw. i really never in not a single game i ever played. i would like to play the competetive mode and look how high i can climb, but there is no way to climb at all, if you permanently play players 300 elo and 3 leagues above you.....

just imagine in chess, someone with the starting elo instantly plays grandmaster players. yeah, what a great expirience for them....

In arena you are paired against random opponents, there is no filter. You can play against people with a lower elo, or a higher one, it is completely random. And the settings are the settings for that arena season, which you cannot change. So that "hack" is just that setting the filter for your normal games, it will do nothing for the arena games as as I know.

Arena is usually more competitive, so I guess the chance of playing against high elo players is higher. That is where most of the addicted live... :-) It also makes sense that you cannot filter who you will be playing against, there is always a way to abuse such a system. And always people who will...

Normal is the more relaxed mode I guess, there you can filter so you are not paired against super strong players.

the thing is: every competetive mode everywhere uses elo or rank or anything to do matchmaking. if you play chess online, you get opponents around your elo, so that you can have a fair competition.

every online game out there does the same.

to just play random opponents which most of the times are way way higher ranked than yourself is kinda demotivating and why do we have elo or ranks at all then? if that does not matter for matchmaking?

i want to play competetive, but it makes absolutly no sense that i play the top 20 ark nova players all the time, while being in silver league with 150 elo.

I believe they tried this sometime last year and pretty much everybody hated it. Mostly because it DRASTICALLY increased wait times for games.

i guess at least the good players hated it, because they cant farm obviously worse opponents all day if elo is used and matchmaking is not completly random anymore

If you're playing good players almost all the time, that means the good players are playing good players almost all the time as well. ;)

I think the key is, the type of person that plays a game in arena mode AND real time, is more likely to be a good player. And the good players tend to play more often.

And I don't know that most good players want to play lower ranked players (I know I don't like to in games I'm good at). Less fun games, and if you care about ELO/arena rank, too big of a risk for a huge loss with very little points earned when you do win. I'm sure it varies a lot by player and by game, though.

If you want to have a say in which opponents you play with, don't play Arena.

its not about playing against the opponent i want, its about havin an elo and league system and not using it in matchmaking.

like i said, its not like this is the norm but the other way around. so i was just confused that the competetive mode of ark nova (or on bga overall), does not use any matchmaking at all, and just pairs people randomly.

thank you for your clever advise to just not play arena.

i still find it pretty strange, that no matchmaking is used at all, and you constantly get paired against people way higher or way lower than yourself. but that explains how someone like the last arena winner, can have over 80% winrate. if half of his games he plays against people way way lower than himself, who he beats easymode.

i still dont think this is a good system.

There is a cost to what you want: a longer wait time. The player base is not that huge, so who do you think the top players should be paired against? 700 elo vs 500 +? 300? That is a way smaller pool of players. Not all of them play arena. Not all in your time zone.
If the queue time gets too long, a good player just not might not play at all. So now the good players are punished.

Bear in mind that Ark nova is very popular right now. In other games it will be a lot worse. And if it is 3 or 4 player games...

So it might be doable for Ark Nova, you could broaden the range after a certain wait time etc. But I think the cost outweighs the benefit.
